VRS TSI Facelift - Exhaust Note

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I've seen a few posts about the very silent exhaust noise that comes from the facelift VRS petrol models.

I know a lot of people like how quiet it is, but for anybody looking for a little bit more road presence, I can recommend a Milltek cat-back system.

I have had one fitted recently and it sounds lovely (IMO) and sporty but certainly not OTT like some systems - Just a nice subtle growl and the renowned DSG farts at higher revs.

I looked at a Scorpion system as well but after going for a ride in a friends car with one fitted I didn't like the motorway drone.

Anyway, my 2018 wagon is running 316BHP with an APR stage 1 map plus the exhaust. The power difference is very noticable along with the subtle raspy sound.

I've added a cold start video if anybody else is thinking of doing similar.

Had my full Milltek exhaust fitted last October and with the other stage 2 mods gives 336bhp on my 245 and the wife drove it to work yesterday and told me that I should never sell it because it's so much fun to drive. Agree it is very subtle at low revs or when cruising a passenger would not be able to tell it wasn't a factory exhaust system. However give it the beans and it sounds like a Golf R but with less weight and 30bhp more. FUN doesn't quite describe how it transforms the car. Should be a factory option like Audi and VW offer on their sportier cars.:inlove:

I don't know why they don't have a factory sports exhaust option. I'm sure it would be very popular.

They certainly become fun when they are the other side of 300hp.

I followed a Golf R for miles the other day and when we got into town the bloke said "I can't believe how quick your car is, I tried my hardest to shake you off" lol..

Mine will accelerate from 60-100mph in 3rd gear (manual gearbox) in 6 seconds flat. More torque and less weight than a new RS3 means stunning acceleration in any gear. 70-150mph takes just 0.7 mile in 6th gear (top ratio in my box).

Nice!

Is that resonated or non resonated?

Resonated. Didn't want the boomy motorway drone you get with non-res.

I do love a good Milltek . I had one on my old Audi S4 - non-res B) . Didn't find it boomy at all on the motorway, despite people telling me not to get the non-res (I ignored their warnings and I'm glad I did!).

The clip above sounds great, particularly if that's the resonated version.

2 questions:

1. what does it sound like inside the car, and if you keep the Soundaktor on how does the exhaust sound when it's mixed with the Soundaktor?

2. maybe an uncouth question, so tell me to f*ck off, but how much did it cost? (my old S4 Milltek was well over £1k... but worth every penny).

Sounds really good inside. Never switched the Acuator off so combines nicely. Only really gets vocal between 3000-7000rpm by which time you're travelling quite quickly. As for cost 3" resonated was £1,200 plus an extra £600 for the 3" downpipe containing the cat.:D

ahh, downpipe as well . Thanks!

Yours or the one in the video?

I was asking about the video Rumboliee posted

Mine is just the cat-back (non res). I had it fitted for under 1k.

I've not done the downpipe, or stage 2 because I'm still enjoying the 316hp that the APR stage 1 brought me. I also get 30mpg! Im sure i'll take the plunge at some point though...

It has a sublte raspy sound below 3000rpm but if I give it some beans it really comes to life... I get DSG gear change farts between 4 and 5k RPM but they go away again if I take it closer to the limit. I also get a few little gargly pops on the downchange.

I just like the fact that it's easy to drive quietly if I want to but I can wake it up easily too!

I'll get a vid of the inside noise if you're thinking of doing similar?

What's the sound like sat at 60 to 70 with cruise control on? Much drone with the non res system?

Difficult to find 'in cabin' videos of that sort of scenario even though that's what most people will be hearing lots of the time.

Golf Rs aren't fast at all, once your moving. Weighs a lot, and the four wheel drive system steals most of the 300hp.

From a standing start they'll destroy a FWD Vrs, unless it's got an LSD, but a standard 245 should quite easily keep up with them on the motorway.

Saw a couple of you tube video's recently and Golf R was 1,522kg (296/306bhp) and Audi RS3 Saloon was 1,633kg. Power-to-weight of the RS3 even with 395bhp is only 242bhp per tonne. My stage 2 Octavia has 245bhp per tonne and more torque (517 versus 480nm).:giggle:

Theres a website (autosnout?) which lists cars by "BHP per tonne", and it's a bit eye opening :D

Guy I work with has an old 1.8t 20v Polo, but hes stripped it out with a big old hybrid turbo stuck on it. His BHP per tonne is staggering, but only for as long as his standard block can cope with it :@

Rumour goes you lose 25% of your bhp in a 4WD, and only 15% in a FWD too, so you'll quite easily take an RS3.

So it sounds a bit fruity with the revs are up a bit but quiet when cruising...

I wasn't expecting actual videos in reply, that's brilliant, thank you

No problem at all. I had to go on the motorway anyway..

Top stuff Rumboliee!! Really appreciate the vids. Like you say, quiet when needed, but sounds great when pushing on. Non-res for me all the way

ps. I keep playing those clips. Missus thinks I'm sad. Sound great!
