Parking sensor issue?

Featured Replies

My 2016 L&K seems to have a possible issue with the parking sensors.   When I’m driving along and pass something which is close by (like a truck or hedge, or whatever!) the music sometimes cuts out and I get a beep or two, with the display, for the parking sensors.  Naturally I have the parking sensors in auto mode, not specifically on or off.

Has anyone else had this issue?   No faults found with VCDS.

Have the menu settings of ‘Rear traffic alert’ or ‘Driver Alert system’ got anything to do with it?

This is normal behaviour below a certain speed. (The car is unaware if you are just passing a hedge, or attempting to park....quickly.)

I'm presuming this isn't happening at 40mph, right?!

Thanks, no I think it’s mostly in traffic or going around corners slowly with things very close to the car.   It’s a little odd though, this is the first car I’ve had where it happens during normal driving (including other VAG cars).   I seem to remember having to turn the front sensors on manually when parking in other cars though.

Wonder if it has anything to do with the fact the car has Park Assist too?    Extra sensors??

If it is speed related, ie there’s a maximum speed where parking sensors are 'active' - like 5 mph - I get that could be configured using VCDS somewhere....

That must be it - it'll be the extra sensors. My MkIII Octavia with park Assist did this, for sure. I just got a MkIII Superb this month, with rear only sensors. I can't recall it doing it once now I think about it...

I wouldn’t expect the sensors to be active at all in normal driving though, unless you are parking or manoevering??

Yes it is the extra (side) sensors. Mine does exactly the same. You will notice that the little sensor box opens up on the infotainment screen at the same time. You can cancel it by pressing the "P" button next to the DSG lever, or it will cancel itself when you speed up.

The problem is that the car doesn't know if you are parking or in traffic. All it knows is that you are going slowly and there are objects nearby. It is a bit disconcerting at first but you soon get used to it.

Thanks Jeff, it’s a proper pain though - one minute you’re listening to music and singing (badly) out of tune to music, then suddenly it cuts out, in favour of a beep and a pop up window showing the proximity of the lorry you had already seen 10 seconds before pulling alongside it.....

Don't know about that, but you might be able to lessen the annoyance. I've got so used to it that I may be wrong, but I don't think mine mutes the music altogether. There is a setting in the infotainment that controls how much the music quietens by when satnav announcements kick in for example. Try playing with that setting - it may be that you can reduce the music volume reduction (if you see what I mean :)) to zero or at least not to mute altogether. Easier as a start-point than wading into long coding...

Mine doesnt have the extra sensors on the sides. Just standard front and rear sensors and mine does it when below a certain speed.

Mine is a 67 plate sportline

Cheers @Adrian55555. I had front and rear sensors on my Mk2 Greenline and it never triggered this kind of alert, so I assumed it must be the side sensors on the Mk3 that caused it. I guess they must have rewritten the software. Thanks for clarifying.

And to the OP, mine definitely doesn't mute the music when it comes on (checked this evening), so it must be possible to change it in the infotainment settings.

Yeah - they rewrote the software badly...!

correct - there is a setting in the infotainment that allows u to specify the volumes associated to the parking sensors audio settings.

its called "Entertainment fading while parking", under Volume settings.

Thanks, yep, I had already tweaked the audio settings to fade out music so I can hear the parking sensor beeps.  When you have music on and are parking, it’s a good idea to have it fade out to say 25% volume.  The issue is that when it does its 'false alarm' beeps when you pass objects or vehicles at low speeds (ie in normal driving, not parking or manoeuvering), you also get the music fading out - very annoying.

I'm going to have a look through all the long coding and adaptation options in VCDS for the parking sensors, to see if there's a speed threshold you can set, at which the sensors don't work.   Thinking about it there must be, otherwise they'd be working when you are driving at much higher speeds and passing traffic, e.g. motorway driving.   Hopefully it can be reduced to say 5 mph (max).

Quite handy that that I have a degree in a German for this bit - albeit from 25 years ago!
