Spare wheel removal on 5 seater

Featured Replies

Can the spare wheel and mouldings on a 5 seater SE be removed to create extra boot space ? Just bought a 5 seater with spare wheel and found boot is not big enough for our needs

Welcome.

Anything that gets fitted can be removed.

?

Do you really want a to be having a puncture or wrecked tyre in a big or even a small vehicle that is so full that you need the extra litre of space a spare wheel takes stuck without a spare and rely on a Break Down Service with a Universal Wheel or recovery on a trailer or flat bed?

Hi

the spare wheel raises the total boot area by 5.7 inches so makes quite a difference to the space. Models without a spare wheel are sold with a sealant to repair punctures

If the car boot is "so full", it could take ages to unpack/organise putting items on the road to get to the spare wheel, in a lot of scenarios, that may not even be possible or safe (busy road/motorway). A lot of people, particularly younger or female drivers don't know how to, or are incapable of changing a wheel. The supplied brace is woefully inadequate even for brawny guys, impossible if a tyre place overtightened with a rattle gun. I always carry a large torque wrench, but last week I needed my 100cm breaker to undo the nuts on my DIL's car, thought I was going to break the bar.

Then there is the problem of where to put that full size wheel you removed, it wont fit where the spare wheel was.

In many cases a call to the breakdown services may be the only rational solution.

My Mk1 Alhambra was excellent in that it had a real full size alloy, fitted outside and under the rear of the car, and pretty easy to remove and refit. That car was a joint venture between VW and Ford and so got the best of both brands.

My Alhambra has no spare wheel or jack as standard, no place for one under the boot or car,

and crap ECO / Seal Seal tyres (changed to not seal seal and all weather tyres)

so one spare does in for local or trips not to the wild countries,

2 spare and the trolley jack on holiday weekends / long festive breaks, or heading north of Inverness.

@xman

There is a spare wheel thread in the Yeti section i thought you might have seen.

Places with no mobile reception,  bad weather, waiting times more than 70 minutes, passengers in cars etc,

but some are happy waiting for a Breakdown responder to come fit a universal spare.

There's no room reserved for a spare in the latest Alhambra either. That's progress for you.

That really is crap in what can be a 7 seater with near no luggage space anyway.

Thankfully having a poverty spec 16" rims means that the tyres are a bit better protection, but still could get wrecked.

With a Kodiaq / Karoq owners could go all 'Lets Offroad' look a likey and fit a roof rack cage and carry a spare or 2 up high.

(or fit a Roof box and keep the spare in the boot.)

Spare on roof would suit the 'Skoda' playing up the 'Monte Carlo' connection.

Will suit the Kamiq as well, Skoda might do a 'Scout Model' with rough tough looks. Rack and spare up on the roof, even tougher to get down than getting out of a loaded boot for those that have trouble doing that.  Big strong man / woman responder or helpful person needed.

I had both a Galaxy and an Alhambra and yes the layout was great, I got caught out one time though, to minimise the disruption to passing traffic I pulled two wheels up onto the kerb but then there was not enough clearance to drop down and pull out the spare, there is only just enough room with a flat rear tyre, in fact I may even have had to jack the car up slightly, cant recall.

The mouldings look like they fit together like a jigsaw.

When I was transferring stuff over today from my old Superb to the Kodiaq, I noticed that you have to remove them in order to install the boot nets correctly.

I haven't done this yet, but plan to this week.

Thank you. So the polystyrene tray is removable?

Yes, it should just lift out.

You'll need to remove the spare wheel first though, as it has a threaded plastic rod through it securing it to the boot floor.

Thank you

Trying taking some pictures of it too, then you should add it to the 'Car Parts For Sale' thread. There are lot more people looking to add the spare wheel than those looking to remove them, so you should be able to get a chunk of money back if you have the complete kit including the polystyrene parts and securing components.

Thank you . Good idea

Yes I have a 5 seater SEL for over a year. I bought it without a spare wheel but bought the kit which I can put in or out depending of what type of journey I am doing and what my boot needs are. The lower floor area for example helps moving larger items to the tip.

Thank you. Do you know whether the kit is the same as the factory fitted spare wheel holder?

Pretty certain. You get the tyre and jack plus the black foam shaped in insert. If you need a new boot floor that is separate as original one won’t quite fit

Does anyone know where I might be able to find the part numbers for the boot floor and polystyrene mouldings for the 5 seater *without* a spare?

Error!

Thanks, looks like this is the part number for the spare wheel kit though. I'm actually after the part numbers for the mouldings and floor that come with the 5 seater *without* a spare or space saver wheel.

Sorry this is the only part number i have but it did come with the parts you are after as well as others you dontwnat
