Tyre wear on 150hp 4x4 yeti

Featured Replies

Hi,  I've just had my first service at 18,000 miles.  The dealer noticed that the front tyres are wearing on the outer edges.  I've had the car for a year and done 10,000 miles.  Almost as soon as I got it I raised the tyre pressure to 2.5 bar (for economy).  I've now increased the front tyres to 2.6 bar.  Anyone else having wear issues?

Thanks for the help.

Regards, Charles

If it's just the outside edges then it's got too much toe-in.

So do you think it is warranty work?  The car is only just over two years old.

Best to get a wheel alignment done, unlikely to be done under warranty (hitting a big pothole can knock out alignment)

If you haven’t already had it done, get wheels swapped front to back at same time to even out the wear.

I’m certain a good Skoda or any other dealers would offer the tracking and new tyres on warranty..........................:D:D But NOT in this world.

No.  Not warranty after 2 years.  Not unless you can honestly say you've never hit a pothole or banged a kerb.  The wear doesn't happen overnight.  You should have a casual glance at the tyres every few months.

Have the tyres X-rotated. Get a 4 wheel alignment by somebody that has a clue.  Your tyre pressures are good though.  Well done.

My tyres were quite worn at the front at 20k when I swapped to winters last Nov.

I have just put them back on but swapped front to back so they all wear out together.

Bit disappointing compared to previous Greenline which went back to lease company on original tyres at 45k, with at least 5k left on fronts

Might help others more if people say what tyres it is that wear badly / unevenly or that lasted well, as in Brand and size on the car.

ECO tyre pressure setting can only be ECO if they reduce the fuel used,

that can only happen if the higher pressures have less tread on the road so less friction / traction when running and likely cornering and braking.

Seems pointless having a AWD then reducing the traction between rubber and road.

Then not that ECO if getting an extra 1 or 2 mpg if the tyres need replaced sooner.

Can't say I have really noted the make, it is what came with the car.

The other problem with eco setting pressure is that the ride is too firm.

Is that the outer edges of each tyre or the car?
If the outer edges of each tyre sounds like you need to check the instrument you use to inflate the tyres.

What do we mean by "outer edges"? Is it the edges of the tyres that are to the outside of the vehicle, or both tyres wearing more on both edges than in the middle?

My 2.0 TDI 4x4 Yeti is exactly the same

It done 16,000 miles

1st set of tyres on the FRONT were changed at 2000 miles because of 2 punctures within 2 weeks..

Then I ran till 13,000 miles and notice both sides of the front tyres were worn bald for the edge 5mm - but fine 4mm or more in the middle.

I have maintenance and tyre contract but they would not change them as they are legal....  ATS... complained to Skoda Maintenance... they know the rules and law... and will not change unless needed...

So it goes to Skoda for tracking and investigation... nothing wrong sir... your just running at too low pressure despite running at the pressure on the flap and having TPS..

They gave me the car back with 2 PSI less pressure in it than I set it at... I have compressor and accurate gauges at home because of motorbikes.

WanXXXs!

I then swapped to winter wheels - because I was not going to drive around in the wet on those...

So now just waiting the first service.. need to do that in about 2 months... (2 years - before the 18,000 miles) to see what the dealer says this time..

Rear tyres are probably at 5mm and even..

Hi SimonAudi,  Thanks so much for the reply.  I've slightly over pressured the front wheel to 2.6 bar rather than 2.5 bar to see if this help will help.  Will check to see if the gauge is accurate.

@Charleswj - A BSI marked pen gauge is about £5 from Halfords; if your present gauge isn't BSI marked you can't presume its accuracy.

As said, get wheel alignment checked and adjusted as necessary.

Have a look here for somewhere near you;

https://www.alignmycar.co.uk/

Replaced my original dunlop sp on the fronts at about 26,000 and was pleased with that mileage ,got 2 of the same from Kwik fit (half price deal) for about £110 the pair and had 4 wheel tracking done free with only one wheel very slightly in need of adjustment which I had to pay for.

I have Pirelli’s on mine. It has done 20k.

I use winters for about 3 months a year and swap front to back when I have the summers refitted and I have the same wear.

It is on the outside, right on the very edge of the tyre. and only about an inch wide.

i run the tyres at the recommended 2.2 bar and use a calibrated gauge. I guess that it’s just normal for my often spirited driving.

@CFB - I've seen wear patterns like that on cars with driven front wheels before (both Front and 4WD), usually worse on the LHF wheel because roundabouts.

Yes mine are much the same after about 20k. (Not entirely sure as had winter tyres on for several months)

I have swapped front to rear to even out wear so all will be changed at the same time.

Years ago a tyre manufacturer recommended Not to change wheels from front to rear.

The placing of front wheels to rear doesn't stop the tyre from wearing in the same manner.

When the two front tyres shows wear, (down to limit) change just the two fronts.

A radial tyre will carry on wearing in the same way, no matter where its placed.

The idea behind it was, if you have a fault, (tyre wearing badly)  placing to the rear doesn't erase the fault. The fault is still there, & will then effect the same wear on the new tyre.

You also need to take into consideration, the front lock on the Yeti is extremely good. And this will increase the side wear on the front tyres.

But front tyres wear out twice as fast as rears at least. I would prefer them all to wear out at the same time so I can fit a matching set all around. By swapping around at about 2/3 wear to front and 1/3 at rear then they will all have same life.

And I don’t agree the wear is the same. Fronts scrub off the outside edge much faster than rears do.
