Help me sort out a few niggles on my car.

Featured Replies

1) Probably the worst - When driving quickly at around 80-100 mph (private road) I get this awful flapping noise (feels like two pieces of plastic hitting very quickly and resonating) as if something is hitting the NSF wheel, a quick inspection reveals nothing, everything seems ok and both the plastic sump guard & the newly fitted NSF arch liner are secure. Any ideas. It's definately from the NSF or just the front as my Dad thinks after a passenger ride but I can't place my finger on it. I am scared to push on past these speeds on my private road now the noise is that violent.

2) Whistling type noise from the front at crawling speeds. When I set off I get almost a whistle or even a very high pitch engine note quietly from what appears to be the engine bay. It doesnt do it when stood still or once I am doing over approx 10 mph, any ideas?

3) Drivers door squeaks just as it closes, very irritating. probably just in need of some WD40.

3) Rattles! One from around the steering wheel but skoda cant find anything. One from the OSF door card or the A Pillar.

1) what condition are the tyres in? Might be worth checking the beading on the inside, as a bit could be hanging off and its only at that speed it is hitting the plastic wheel arch liner. :) Whip both wheels off and inspect the inner bit of each tyre. Aside from that I though plastic engine undertray as well. Could just be one missing torx bolt and it's not obvious until you hit 80+

2) No idea. :o

3) Yeah, Wd-40 or some good old grease.

4) Its worth checking the area between the door card and the cover on the end of the dash - these two come together when the door shuts and sometimes they can squeak whilst rubbing. I think someone ages ago said put a layer of vaseline on the cover on the end of the dash. Hope that helps. Which bit of the steering wheel is the rattle coming from? Might be worth checking that the bit of trim which slides under the dashpod it secure too (give it a shove :D) Apart from that I can't think of anything which could rattle around the steering wheel.

1) Thanks, will have a look tonight. Might get the Stealers to take a look and see if they can diagnose the fault, but worth checking this out myself aswell as it's very worrying.

2) :(.

3) Thought so, will let the Stealers do it though as should be under warranty.

4) I believe it's coming from the steering column ever since I had the cruise control fitted. Skoda did try to make an adjustment on this but I made it worse not better, but like with all problems they disappear when you take the car in for warranty work.

Oh...

5) Front of the entire dahboard vibrates when the car is cold and engine is at low rpm.

All I can think of is check all the torx bolts in and around the dash area.

Thanks mate, i've rung Skoda and i've agreed that I am taking the car in tomorrow for an inspection then they are going to fix everything on my very long list including brakes/new tyres on the 19th april :)

How much would Skoda charge for a new rear bumper including fitting for the vRS, anyone have access to their system to check for me :o ?

The back bumper is in 2 parts. The outer part is just over

Ouch, that's a lot of money to the driver who rear ended me or his insurance company :(

Oh well, atleast I get a shiny new bumper :D

I think this is simply turbo whistle. My turbo is very vocal at the moment, possibly due to the cold, dense air.

3) Drivers door squeaks just as it closes, very irritating. probably just in need of some WD40.

I think this is the wing mirror pivot point. I sprayed a bit of silicoln lube (dry lube) in their, and alas it no longer sqeeks. I don't recommend WD40 as this is a magnet for muck.

The one from around the steering wheel is most likely the dash pod in its housing. I unscrewed the dash pod and jammed in some felt tape. Silence! :D As for the door card, I sandwiched a lot of thick foam in the card, no chance of rattles now. But the a-pillar, give it a good punch and make sure the door seal is on properly over its edge.

I hope this helps mate, not that I have a REPUTATION for being the best ;)

I had to have a new back bumper and front bumper when I was in the middle of a wee pile up. Was the most tiny damage and didnt need more than a repair with a touch up kit. But I got new bumpers, but the finish is lack-lustre, and they are not genuine bumpers and do not fit very well.

However, since then I need a new bonnet due to an off roading experience, and some buerk in a car park nudged the side of the back bumper, scuffing the paint. So I'll be buying genuine Skoda parts (

Hmmm, better make sure my local stealers do it then as they are an approved repair centre also.

I think problem 1) could be the plastic sump guard resonating due to the high speed airflow underneath the car. My car is lowered and when carrying three passsengers (i.e. lowering it still further) at high speeds on M/ways I get a similar noise due to the small gap between the guard and the ground through which the air has to pass, causing the guard to vibrate. Also worth checking all the guard's fixings are in place. Mine had one missing.

skoda has just replaced my steering colum after i complained of a metalic sounding rattle around the area. the technician said when all the trim was off he could re-creat the sound from to flaps on the steering colum. he rang skoda for help and they said they had not heard of this problem before but if he could re-creat the sound then they should replace the part, which meant a new colum under warrenty. couple of hundred miles done and no rattle now.

Thanks for all the replies :)

  • 2 years later...

So what was the main rattle in the end? Undertray?
