Great tyres IME.  I've had them on a Superb 3 150 TDI and now on the 280 4x4 and they've coped well with every bit of weather and driving I can throw at them.  Very surefooted and predictable; a true all-rounder.

They've covered ~21K miles in total now (the dealer swapped them over onto my new car) and the fronts are currently at 5mm and rears 6.5mm.  I can't believe the wear rate.

sounds good with the wear rate :) they have been good so far , i think they a bit more summer oriented, better for the UK climate I think, tyre reviews rated them as one of the best "mid-range all season" to buy :) £380 for x4 fitted wasn't bad !

I still can't get over the size of the font on the sidewalls! 🤣

ok, the car smokes like a PD would sometimes, but its supposed to be a euro 5 with a DPF... in the thousands of miles we've done, its never done a regen, it runs really well, and no error messages, so it cannot be blocked... I think its been deleted... the car is right on the crossover date between euro 4 (no DPF) and euro 5... its deffo the later euro 5 as it has the 6 speed auto, the euro 4 had the 5 speed auto.... some guy on a facebook group said, if you remove the emmisions tag in the door frame the MOT tester will not test it as Euro 5 as he doesn't know which it is.... I went to look at the log book, seems to be euro 5, went to look at the emmisions tag, and guess what?! its been bloody removed! 😮 a previous owner has probably took the DPF out , and removed the tag.... if i pootle for ages in it , to build up soot in the exhaust then boot it, it smoked like a PD ! so clearly there must be no DPF.... will be interesting come MOT time......

but then they bloody mot the 1992 Eunos as an MX5, and they should MOT is as a Eunos, because the import didn't need a cat at that time, but the MX5 did! * sigh.....

its going to the place that always manages to MOT my octy anyway lol...

@sharkrider

Is there a difference in the VED / band for the Euro 4 & Euro 5, and is your VED the later?

  • Author

not really george... its the particulates and the NOX that are lower, co2 is only one difference... so VED the same. deffo should be a euro5 as it certainly has the 6-speed box!

  • Author

ok... that says euro 4... but I got it wrong above, I said 4 and 5, but they are euro 3 and 4.... 4 does have the DPF ! *sigh.... never mind! more power and less to go wrong :)

what is quite amusing is that while the volvo doesn't meet the standards for the ULEZ in central london, the octavia does! 😮 lol.. and that spits fire out the back!

As it’s an 06 plate car, I wouldn’t expect it to have a dpf to be honest. Have a look underneath on top of the rear axle where it will have a Eolys tank if it’s got a dpf. It’ll also have a dpf sensor on the bulk head on the right just behind the battery with 2 soft pipes going to it if it’s got a dpf. If it does have one then it’ll be the wet fluid dpf style and not the later dry system. The only way to be sure really is to have it on Vida and scan it and see what it shows. If there’s a checksum error of any kind then it’s been mapped which indicates either tuning and/or deletion of something.

The big 2.4 doesn’t need additive, only the smaller engined ones, battery is in the boot... got to get under it at some point to have a look really....

So it’s got the dry system then with a soot filter/trap?

ok, so we took the car away this weekend (got 600 miles from a tank! :O) but it kept loosing power, no fault codes (from my stupid OBD app reader)

took it in to my tame mech today, and he put it on a proper computer, LOADS of stuff came up... no back pressure from DPF (its deffo been gutted) one injector not able to meet demand, ECU communication issues etc etc etc ...

end of story is, its all been cleared and working, tuning box is OFF... in all likelihood DPF delete done properly , so should be ok with ECU, but tuning box may have asked more than one of the old injectors could supply, and thats killed it....

soooooo, some injector cleaner and super diesel for a while, and the tuning box has to stay off... at the end of the day , that should keep it running fault free.

That shows my old petrol Octavia as Euro 4 - it's a 2001 car?

Might be a quirk that, or an error on the database.

As Euro4 was Jan 05 for new vehicle type approval and January 06 for all new registrations to have to comply.

So a 2001 Octy would be Euro3.

not true, Euro 4 was "legally required" by a certain date, but done already on many cars way before, just lake cats were fitted way before they were legally required, just like ABS was fitted way before legally required etc etc. the database is correct.

Get what you're saying - 2001 just seems very early.

The dates I listed are the 'worst case scenario' for sure.

****ing thing is broken... has about 40 bhp. should have bought a superb with 300k on it. 😞

  • Author

ok... calmed down and investigated.... ECU is complaining that there is no DPF... but there hasn't been a DPF since we bought it! and it did the last 4k without issue..... here's what I think, its obviously had a DPF delete, (I didn't know this for sure, and had no idea at all when I bought it!) I think it may also have been remapped already, then I put the box on and ****ed it up... box is off, fault codes cleared, ran all day today without issue, (and keeps up with a mini cooper S on full throttle..... sounds like 220 bhp.... ) think I'm gonna leave it alone, and keep the OBD reader in the glovebox to clear any codes..... *crosses fingers

"Box on", as in a tuning box? Sounds like the most logical scenario that this is causing an ECU issue. Especially combined with the DPF delete.

FIngers crossed it's smooth running from here!

yeah, still going strong at the moment... wish we knew were told it might have been mapped and DPF delete , wouldn't have put the box on otherwise! a tuning box on a map is a bloody recipe for disaster! 😮

Was it a private sale?

yes, he only had it since before winter, has a nice 850 T5R "summer car" in his garage, and always buys a 4wd that needs some work for the winter, does it up and sells it. it had some ABS rings, new swirl flap arm, cambelt and service, new alternator... think that was it.
