New owner - Tesco 99RON and engine warning light

Featured Replies

Hey briskoda's

first off, last weekend i went up to norwich and bought the silver vrs off mike from the for sale section. great car. enjoyed the blast home.

come today. filled up at tescos with super unleaded 99ron. drove probably 10 miles around, got home and everything fine.

jumped in the car to pop to the shops and it was mis firing in low revs. lumpy idle and slight petrol smell as i drove around. decided not to risk in an limped back home. Once home there are a very strong sulphur smell in the cabin and outside.

running it now, it's not as lumpy but not right. every now and then the engine warning light flashes.

now i would guess is bad fuel. typical tescos. so im tempted to go for a drive and try and burn it off.

any thoughts ?

Coilpacks checked?

Must say that I went off Tesco's 99 after it caused difficult cold starts this winter. One tank of Optimax resolved it fortunately, so I'm sticking to that.

Stale Fuel !!!! Talk to Beretta, he delivers the stuff ,,,,, well now and again !!!!!:D

I've driven many miles on both 99ron and Optimax. the 99 was a few pence cheaper than Optimax, although the price is closer now.

Starting is fine although I have an occasional 'lumpy kangaroo' running (it's possibly the boost control valve or throttle sticking) if I change into second for about 100yards when it is cold outside, but that doesn't seem to be to do with the flavour of petrol in the tank.

Given the choice, and I usually do have it, I would use 99ron, with half a tank of Optimax every few weeks, as I presume that it has more detergent in it.

humm. im now thinking its a coil pack.

apparently that goes with the egg smell.

what does a coil pack replacement entail?

I have been told that it is the presence of 5% bioethanol in Tesco 99RON which can lead to cold starting problems. gorsey's problem does sound like it could be a dodgy coilpack and it is easy to diagnose with VAG-COM. If it is a coilpack, driving the car with unburnt fuel going into the cat could lead to premature and expensive cat failure.

site went a bit mental then...

well i guess i will ring the local dealer tomorrow. maybe just buy a coil pack and fit it. i will ask them if i can drive it and see what they say :)

It is worth carrying a spare coilpack so that you can keep the car on the road if one fails. We used to have pics in the gallery showing how to change one. Put simply, remove the plastic top cover on the engine and you will see 3 of the coilpacks - the No 4 is hidden under a vacuum tank. Unclip the electrical connection and pull the coilpack vertically upwards. It might help to place a large screwdriver under the plastic head to give a little leverage. If it is the No 4, it is easy to see what needs undoing to get at it.

Strange that....... the day afetr I filled up with Tesco 99 RON my Octavia became poorly !! In my case a complete set of coil opacks sorted it (because I thought I may as well change all 4)

wow very strange. can't imagine how the petrol can effect the coil packs. maybe puts more strain on them ?

yeah i think i will pull them all out tomorrow and see what version they are. If the old versions i will be looking for some free replacements.

cant believe 3 days owning a skoda and its already broken down. god im going to get some sh** from my family - honda salesman and vuaxhall mechanic.

lets just hope the southampton dealer offers some decent customer service.

yeah was coil pack number 3. looks like the older version so i may try and get skoda to replace the rest on the next service. Can you get these done for free ?

I believe there was a Skoda bulletin which recommended that if 1 went, then the dealer was to replace the other 3 FOC with the latest version. I'm sure DGW will be along shortly to correct/clarify that :D

Chris

I think you will now find that this was stopped and is now done by the dealer contacting Skoda UK and asking for their permission to do it.

Have to add that I have used Tesco 99 from the day it came out, and really do rate the stuff, the engine is far more responsive.
