Water leakage from sunroof

Featured Replies

Hello, I am facing this unique problem of water leaking into the cabin from the sunroof. Have got it checked at the service center but the problem refuses to go away. My car will complete 3 years in July 2019. The water drips inside the cabin from where the lights are located.

Took a few pictures after opening the sunroof and water marks can be seen clearly (image attached).

Has anyone else also experienced this issue and if yes how was this resolved.

Would appreciate any guidance on this

Check the drain holes aren’t blocked. I’m not sure where they are in the Superb but usual places are front door shuts or in the wheel arch. Rears are usually under the bumper below the rear light clusters.

Check Water drains at the 4 corners. Most of the time, they're simply clogged with dust / mud...

Some times , the drains are disconnected from the sunroof chassis...

These both root causes are (un?)fortunately well know in the VAG world.

In the most severe case, the water leakage is caused by cracks on the sunroof chassis.

I faced this 3rd case on my previous Superb Mk2: 2500 € to get it repaired !

Fortunately the customer service gave me a 60% coverage, since I argued it would make me decide to go for a MK3... or not... ;)

Thanks for your inputs. I drove the MK2 for five years but never faced this issue. Only with the MK3 this has come up. I did try to poke a long needle into the two front drain holes but I am not sure if that is enough. Maybe I need to poke a long wire to make sure there is no obstruction throughout.

Any inputs on if this is a good idea ?

This should work. Try with a bike brake cable (2m ?). Simultaneoulsy long, hard and soft enough, to unclog the grains...

At least, just try... If I were facing the same issue. I would probably try it. :)

Hi Bap33, thanks again for your inputs. I got a bicycle gear cable and got down to shoving that into the drain holes from the sun roof. Couldn't get that more than 5 inches inside. Which is when I discovered that you don't need a 2 m cable at all, all that is needed is 5-6 inches. What Skoda has done in the MK3 is the drain holes drain water just besides the windshield. From there on water takes the same path as taken by regular rain water.

See the attached picture. I have highlighted where I shoved the cable in and you can also see it jutting out right above the windshield. The solution is very simple, only thing is dirt clogs these holes leading to leakage.

Thanks once again for your help & inputs. IMG_20190421_154047__01.thumb.jpg.0ce1b3a21b6172ed10d33d326a6de1b3.jpg

And now, does it work? Did you solve the leakage problem?

Hi
I seem to be suffering a similar problem with a leak from the sunroof on my 2018 Superb estate, clearly not unique! Today, after returning from holiday, I found the front foot wells under water; there had been several heavy rain storms while I was away.

When I opened the sun roof to check why it was leaking I found the side channels full of mud. In the uk we have had quite a dry summer but when ever it has been wet the rain has brought down a lot of dust with it and I think that this must be the cause of the mud.
After removing as much mud as possible from the side channels I poured in a small amount of water to check if blocked drain holes were the cause if the problem. The water did not drain away which sort of confirmed my suspicion about blocked drain holes. However, on using a 300 mm length of plastic rod to try a loosen the blockage the water level remained the same.
The end of the plastic rod did not appear at the windscreen as Asharma suggested. On loosening the A pillar trim I noted that there was a rubber tube that ran down and disappeared behind the dashboard. Checking various online spare part sites I noted that this tube is in fact the drain for the sunroof. I think that what Asharma did was to push the rod, perhaps over the top of the drain channel, and through the top windscreen seal.
Tomorrow I will investigate further and perhaps using is longer plastic rod to try and dislodge the blockage, I shall be very careful as I do not want the detach the drain tube from the drain channel or cause any other damage. Hopefully I will be able to report a successful resolution of the problem.

The problem effects the front of the sunroof probably because it is normally parked on a slope with the front at the lower level.  I don’t think there is a problem at the rear of the sunroof but does anyone know how to access the rear drain holes?

Have a look on cardiag.com. You can download workshop manuals for free.

I think you'll find an answer in Body 'repair' chapter

Do not push a stick/tube down the pipes!!! There is a good chance you’ll detach them and if it’s anything like the older ones, they will never go back on properly and you’ll have to replace.

the blockage will be in 2 places. Where the tube starts at the sunroof which you have cleaned. And in the wheel arch front and rear where the tube ends.

the best way to describe it is like a cows udder but in black. And it will be blocked solid with dirt, if you find it in the wheel arches and either open it up and clean it out or massage it and all the dirt will break apart and fall out. Then flush it through with water from above and clean it fully

I think that this is exactly what the previous owner of my partners Octavia RS 2014 did...

I had a floding in the floor after the first heavy rain... If this happens to anyone you have to take off the front A pillar trim cover, behind the trim there is a tube that is probably disconnected.

I have glued the tubes back together with some epoxy, because I dont want any future problems with this...  Luckily there was no damage on the electronics.
