Coil pack extractor and appropriate plug spanner

Featured Replies

I'm not up to speed on modern petrol engines, I have a 2019 Skoda 1.0L 110ps three cylinder tsi motor.

What tools do I need for removing the coil pack and spark plugs, please.

Your car is under warranty for three years so do not touch anything that might invalidate your warranty. Also modern plugs generally last 40k miles these days so no need to buy stuff you won't need for at least three years. Use quality fuel and the risk of plugs coking up (as they used to do) is extremely low. I have also heard scare stories about modern plugs being difficult to access and being snapped in the process of removing making it expensive  to fix. "Back in the day" I would change, clean or adjust my own spark plugs but for modern engines I now leave it to the experts.

Different engine, but I've bought or got all I need to replace the plugs on my wife's 2015 1.2TSI Polo when its "year 4" service is due, the coil extractor for that car utilises the hole for the retaining bolt, and it has an expanding/split sleeve that expands and grips the sides of the fixing hole, then you pull it straight up and out, the plug socket only needs to be of the correct size and preferably have built in magnets to grip the plug.

If you are preparing for this task, maybe look on Laser Tools website as they sell these tools, normally if you on one of the premium plug manufacturer's website, they will tell you which type of plug is suitable and also include info on it like the "AF" hex size so that you have the correct sized socket.

Edit:- I'd always play safe and have a torque wrench of the correct torque range as well - and use it.
