Fuel Gauge over-reading and MPG.....

Featured Replies

It would appear that the fuel gauge reading is over optimistic on my car.Gauge  was reading between close to  3/4 full, yet it took 16.5 ltr to fill. OK -its only an indication, and not a precision  measure.   Worked this out at 40.65 mpg using full to full.Granted all driving styles are different, and my journeys are never more than 4 miles these days ,so the car is never at proper temp  and  is not run in......

Yet I was expecting nearer to 50mpg around the houses....one cylinder less in the Green tec engine should mean 20% plus saving.  Still a lot better than 28.5 mpg with the old Corsa D.

No mpg figures are given for urban  in the car handbook, and all manufacturers are cagey about telling the truth.I remember the VW fiasco.......

All Manufacturers published the EU Test results.  Not sure about cagey,  fiction yes, but they were the results they had at test facilities with a car on a certain day.

Car inside a temperature controlled building on a rolling road.

Nothing to do with the real world.

Now there are WLTP figures and there will be RDE figures on the cars from September last year,

maybe look at those even though not 'round the door figures'.   just the test regime ones. 'For comparison',

4 mile trips with cold starts is never likely to give a combined figure.

.......Yep,my figure is nearer the real mpg. Some of the mileage done with air con on,so more drag and energy taken by the engine.

Thanks  for the detail.Surprised there is not much comment on here about mpg........many don't bother with accurate checks but once bought  - you've got what you've got....

Lots of MPG threads in this section if you just look.

Similar to you, I use the car almost exclusively to get to work and back. This is 4.5 miles each way. Obviously cold start both ends. The engine doesn't reach 90deg until roughly 2.5 miles into the trip. I doubt the oil barely warms up at all.

Under this regime I have two figures for you, the PID computer value  and my full tank to full tank real value. In summer PID value is around 48-51 with a real value of 45-48. In winter the PID value is always around 44 with a real value of 41.

These are ‘best case’ values driving with an eye on consumption. If I drive more quickly, hold revs longer, etc., those figures will fall by a couple of mpg.

I have not problem getting 58-60mpg on a motorway run.

I'm an Isle of Man resident, so no motorway or dual carriageway motoring.

I'm running a 60hp Colours model, bought new in July 2016 with 13 miles on the clock.

Brimming the tank for all 89 top-ups, it has used 2799.7 litres in 41664 miles = 60.98 mpg costing a total of £3527.41.
