Superb vs V90 for Dog Carrying Ability

Featured Replies

With the time to move the my 65 Plate Mk 3 L&K on at some point over the next few months I have been looking at my options and I have boiled them down to another Mk3 with some extra toys such as Pano Roof, Virtual Cockpit and a few others bits and bobs that mine currently doesn't have or move to another brand (it'll be my 3rd Superb in a row if I got another one)

The boot has always been a winning point for me because it's allows my German Shep and Labrador oodles of room to sprawl out or sit up and watch the world go by.

I was lusting for a new Volvo V60 but I was really disappointed when I checked the boot out it's meant to have 545ltrs which i knew was going to be a slight downsize but its was noticeable smaller.

Then I looked at the V90 which from the opening lip to the back of the rear seats is nearly the same as the Superb

1170mm for the Superb and

1153mm for the V90

Width is

1000mm for the Superb and

1100mm for the V90

Height to Roof is the biggest difference

800mm for the Superb (non variable floor) and

704mm for the V90

Superb = 660ltrs (to the parcel shelf)

V90 =  560ltrs (to the parcel shelf)

Superb = 800ltrs +?  (I can't find this measurement online) to the roof

V90 = 723ltrs to the roof

On paper there is not much in it for length and width however when I look at the V90's boot it appear really shallow with no boot lip like the Superb but this makes the floor to ceiling height even more restricted with the steeply raked rear tailgate buuuut,   its a bit like look at an empty room in a house you intend to buy, sometimes looks are deceiving and once you start moving furniture in it all starts to make sense.

Can anyone advise, has anyone got some medium large pooches and has ferried them in a V90?

I am also really waiting out for the Superb PHEV but I have seen no details on it recently and I guess we won't see a facelifted Superb model for quite a while yet that dramatically moves the game on.

I am also wondering if a dealership would let me bring my dogs to let them hop in and see whats its like for them...??

Neighbour in the last 7 years has had Mk2 Superb estate, Mk3 Superb estate (the most practical choice IMHO), BMW 5 Touring (didn't keep it long) and now the Volvo V90 estate (the best looking). Always thought the reason for choosing a large estate was either having at least 3 kids, large dogs to carry or as a business tool to carry bulky samples or engineers equipment.

Very true SHYVrs340PS

1 daughter

2 x Large Dogs

All the clobber that comes with them, pushchairs, changing bags and the Superb just swallows it with all in comfort. It's still a tempting choice.... (must resist the 4x4 272......makes no financial sense at all buutttt....lol)

272 makes no financial sense until you realise how much you need to spend elsewhere for similar or better performance. Then it feels like a bargain!

I feel having more height is probably nicer for your dogs in the back.

I've just signed the dotted line for a Volvo V90 this last week (delivery due on Saturday), again I need a big car for moving large amounts of equipment about with my job.

Current car is a 66 plate Superb hatch, and yes the boot's massive. I had some of my gear in the boot anyway, so the dealership (Clive Brook Huddersfield) were more than happy for me to try it out, and with your last question, I did ask what's the weirdest thing they've ever seen tested in the boot of the car, and she said she'd seen all sorts, and it's not uncommon (or an issue) for dog owners to see how well their dogs fit. Ultimately, if you're buying a car fit for purpose, you need to check in the most realistic way possible, and having had to shift my gear in numerous different cars, you realise that the numbers are just numbers. Yeah, the Superb has a deeper boot for example, but I'm also recovering from a smashed finger after I trapped it between a PA speaker and the boot lip whilst hauling it out.

The showroom had their demonstrator V90 and V60 in the showroom next to each other, boots open. Looking at it, I reckon height wise, the V60 has more to it by looking at it, but you can tell it's definitely smaller.

I don't know if you've driven one yet, but if you haven't, I seriously recommend it. If you're used to DSG, you might not get along with the gearbox. 8 speed but not dual clutch, so it's not the quickest of things, but the 190bhp D4 had enough poke when I took it on the motorway and it was fine for me. It's a very relaxing drive, the quality is so much higher than my Superb and has tonnes more kit (Superb is SEL Executive, Volvo is in Inscription spec).

The best thing you can do is take your dogs over to a Volvo dealer, and have a look and see if it's for you.

This is where I went the other weekend as I live about 6 miles from Clive Brooke Huddersfield, the V60 did have a large metal dog guard in the back of it but it was noticeably smaller than the V90 next to it...It's a shame as I prefer the look of the V60 over the V90........

I wondered in the showroom at 16:45 knowing it closed at 17:30 (Saturday). Business must have been quiet that day as they were all packed and ready to go and I felt ushered out of the showroom....wasn't a good start to the experience to say the least, A lady stopped me int he middle of the showroom asking if I was okay, but as she had her coat on and her handbag over her shoulder I was a bit confused if she was a colleague or a member of the public....

She could have been the cleaner and hoping you left quickly so she could get on with her job.:tongueout:

Ahh that's a shame, they were absolutely great with me. I'm pretty sure the saleswoman clocked me as soon as I pulled into the car park, gave me a couple of moments and then asked me if I needed any help. Answered all my questions, showed me around each model, sorted out test drives and numbers etc. She was even willing to let me take it out on a longer test drive than just up and down the road, as I'll spend a lot of my time in it, I have to know it's right. I think the test drive must have been getting on for an hour.

:), must have just caught them at the wrong time of day but it won't phase me going back,.....and its encouraging that they mentioned about the pooches to you and let you have an extended drive, I hopefully want to be able to do my normal commute (around 20mile round trip) as it'll be good to see what I get MPG wise on my normal day to day route.

Pretty sure I'll be then hunting for a few months to find the perfect example as I cant afford to buy new, getting the unicorn spec will be hard work, my main wants are an Inscription (or Pro), with blonde or amber interior with the Xenium pack, BLIS, + Piloit Assist with at least the HK Soundsystem upgrade as the standard one is awful (i've sat in but not driven at Available Car , Leeds and I am comparing it to the Canton)....

Like my L&K which I picked up from Southhampton , location isn't an issue...

However is the Unicorn Spec Superb came up I would also be very tempted

That's fair, I was pretty lucky with the one I found. Didn't want to go brand new as it would've easily been £45 with the options I wanted.

I ended up with a D4 Inscription with the Winter pack and a couple of other bits on it, like upgraded nappa leather and such. I didn't want the Xenium pack as I can get the reverse camera put on at a later date if required, but in summer, I found the glass roof on my Avensis unbearable with black leather. Mine's also got the aluminium trim inserts too rather than wood, on a silver car it's just a bit nicer.

Typical, when you've fallen out with a V60 on first glances  at the boot and then this comes up which is pretty much perfect in all ways.......hmmz I may need to bundle a few dogs in a V60 as well :D

We looked at Volvo estates and was surprised by the lack of height. They were good enough to allow us to put the dog in the boot whilst we were looking and our Alaskan Malamute (similar size to a GSD) had her head bent down in the Volvo.

We never looked at Superb’s as we bought a 4x4. which gave plenty for f head height and better cooling for her with pop out windows in the boot area and separate AC too

Which 4x4 did you go for?
