I permanently fixed mine in the cold position and it's been absolutely fine.

Me too. Two holes and a tyrap.

I removed the whole air box & built my own CAI sealed system...so never had a problem with this flap...😂

Solution.

Just kidding. Sealing the warm air flap will work wonders, let us know how it goes. I fit a piece of hard vulcanised rubber between the spring and the thermostat element to shut the flap in the 'fresh air' position, then sealed it with some gasket maker. Some people use screws too to fix it in place, I don't recall doing it but probably did.

Wowzers that looks like a very special kind of 'Beast"!

Indeed. Who knows what a pair of Schrick cams, a lightened flywheel, a mating exhaust system and a bit of fiddling with the ECU can do to that...

Easy 140BHP...……..

ABT did a tune, which was a slight remap, road version Schrick cams...& a drop in air filter & removal of "restriction " in the factory air box.....also better spark plugs & better ignition leads.....all on the standard exhaust & inlet  & exhaust manifolds....

& BTW the ECU was the standard MM one which was noted for not allowing much modification...so very little was gained from the ECU remap....& the cams were not "lumpy"...….

Full on tuning those engines produced 180 to 220BHP depending is AUB or BBZ?...ie the cams/followers etc....& wasted spark or coil packs...

The ABT kit included a piggyback ECU because the standard MM ECU cannot be remapped at all.

Wow nearly doubling the HP!

Yeah I couldn't remember if a re-flash or piggy back when I wrote it.....I just remember that the MM ECU was a PITA....from when I spoke to tuning companies about the possibility of getting my car done..which I didn't...

Well nowadays the ECU doesn't seem to be a problem according to the few shops I've been in.

That's your first clue that they don't know what they're doing, Marelli and Siemens ECU cannot be remapped, Bosch is just fine.

That's what I'm wondering, being reputable shops and all.

Well I've emailed several experienced tuning companies where I live and they swear they've had work done in the MM 4MV before. Not just local shops mind you, but the big ones. I've even shown them what's being stated on this forum and they say that's no longer the case.  It's been 20+ years since these engines saw the light of day so I guess there are better ways than a piggyback ECU now, finding ways around original maps (either by chipping or by reprogramming) is what tuning companies do for a living anyway and in this case I'll give them the benefit of doubt.

For now what I said stands: ECUs don't seem to be a problem at least on this side of the pond for them. Just a few hours' work according to the companies.

Just to be clear, the ECU is flashable otherwise the manufacturer would not be able to update the firmware, however it used to be the case that it was not possible to dynamically map it while the car was running on a dyno say. It is possible that some clever sausage has written a replacement firmware which, once flashed to the ECU allows for dynamic mapping. Both these ECU's are basically dumb clones of the posh Bosch unit after all.
