Hi guys

Having been hunting around for a daily driver for possibly the best part of 2months.

Started at the 130i, then the 330i but the prices of good ones seem to be quite expensive for my budget!

I've always been a fan on the superb and octavia but the main questions I have are to do with the cr170 engine and the dsg gearbox.

I've done about a weeks worth of reading but id like some user feedback as to if I would benefit from the cr170. I've seen the horror stories of the 2.0tsi which really has put me off it!

I'll be doing 15-20miles a day of motorway, Mon-friday with trips included at the weekend! I have another car which is coming off the road as a summer project. (Petrol 1.8t audi!)

Dpf issues arise from alot of short trips, but I've seen the dpf removal and egr mapped out. But in terms of issues vs the tsi I'd rather have dpf issues.

In terms of the dsg, I know 40k intervals are recommended and I would be happy to do it, what else to look out for? I've never had a auto, so it's quite new to me!

I'm hoping the car would suit my needs, as the pricing of vrs octavias is good for me, anyone using it for the same usage?

Thanks

15-20miles is really border line.... if its heavy traffc, low speed stuff the diesel will suffer.

Its been mentioned alot recently that there could be a future change to MOT whereby dpf and egr deletes could become failures, so that plan is even a bit iffy. Theres also lots of other problems that arise from short/slow driving - sticky turbo vanes, for example.

Honestly if i was only doing that drive id be going petrol, even if it isnt slow heavy traffic...

This is my dilemma!

I mean the horror stories of the tsi have really put me off petrol from vag, fortunately its quite a moving 15-20 miles with not alot of stop start!

I mean main thing for me is reliability and cost! Especially as I'm looking at older cars!

Dpf and egr would still be present as isn't it only a visual check? It's when the mot gets updated to include a more thorougher exhaust gas check is when alot of people will suffer!

Still not sure and I need a car 😞

Whilst it wasn't a DSG, my old Oct 2 Scout was. Diesel and I would probably do a minimum of 65 miles a day cross country in moving traffic at normal speeds, other days 300 mile+ round trips to London.

I remember once getting stuck in traffic crossing London (having driven 160 ish miles to get there early doors so was normal motorway speeds), I did about 8 miles in 2hrs and that was enough to put the DPF light on.  Fortunately once I got moving again on the motorway heading home, Fter about 10 mins of 60 mph it cleared.

Whilst I don't think your journey would be an issue for a Diesel as long as you did some enthusiastic gear changes every so often, as above it's probably a 50/50 as to whether Diesel or petrol is best.

In days gone by I had a 1.8 tsi and that had major oil useage issues and I handed the car back after about 6 weeks.  If at purchase (used) I'd bothered to lift the engine cover off I would have seen the haunting stains of oil down the front of the engine from the previous users constant refilling!  They aren't all bad oil users, but when they are, they are.
