GT1749V(S2) PD160 Turbo - It is different to the PD150!

Featured Replies

Hey all SAVS!

After a year of owning my upgraded turbo I've finally work out what exactly  the differences are between the PD150 and PD160 turbo.
I had bought and fitted the GT1749V(S2) to my Golf PD130 as it was sold to me as a PD160 turbo, i thought may as well pick that up as i was looking for a PD150 any way. Then days before the install there was panic from researching far and wide as to whether the turbo was from smaller engine or not but with the larger cartridge.
The cartridge was easy to match as its from a PD150 internals but the casing name was the difficult bit. Everything i search came back as the Ibiza Cupra which was good but still couldn't work out why the change in casing name.
I then came across the same turbo but under a different name, know to the Alfa Romeo guys as the GTB1749MV.

The Standard GT1749VB has a CCM of 1896ccm. this is the amount of air capable of being compressed, please correct if wrong.
These sellers (which i recently stumbled across) claim the GT1749V(S2) has CCM of 1900cmm, which means an extra 104ccm of air to be forced into the block!

So my findings:
The casing of the V(S2) is larger than the VB, allowing for more boost under less PSI?

Thanks for the read and hope this helps people.
And as always, Happy modding ;)

1900 cm3 minus 1896 cm3 is 4 cm3 not 104.

Probably not worth worrying about, they're obviously basically the same if they have the same cartridge internally.

Apologies, you are very right, post was a bit rushed, had 2000 in my mind for some reason. I know it's nothing to worry about there's just no post any where that explains the difference, everyone either thinks they're identical or that GT1749V(S2) doesn't exist😂

Packaging considerations and orientation are likely to account for any difference rather than performance characteristics.

Orientation is the same as I didn't have to clock it to fit the pd130/150.

Packaging relies on the model number not the other way round 😂

Packaging considerations means the OEM installation specified by the manufacturer according to where various parts are in the engine bay on a different car which have to be connected to the turbo. Some engines have the turbo in front, some behind depending where the exhaust manifold is.

Then you'll know with all your great wisdom that all 3 of the high PD's share the same layout, having the turbo and exhaust/inlet manifold on the same side. Even the Audi A4 B6 has the engine mounted differently but still uses the GT1749VA, not some magical made up turbo name. Stop arguing for the sake of arguing.
You have a problem. 😂

I don't have a problem, I can do basic arithmetic, I was simply pointing out that having the same cartridge makes them functionally the same.
