Vibrating Airbox 2006 Octavia 4 x 4 Estate

Featured Replies

I have a 2006 Octavia 4x4 Estate. 1.9 PD-TDI 8V turbo diesel 77kW BXE, Delivered 14.06.06

It had a vibrating engine panel from new but main dealers couldn’t find and correct it (or couldn’t be bothered perhaps). At 200000 miles it has become unbearable and the main dealer who has tried tells me it’s the airbox fixings and that the holes have become so elongated with the vibration that they can’t get it to permanently tighten (despite two attempts). I’m currently living away from my garage and so don’t have facilities to self fix so am considering taking it to an independent for work. I’m hopeful that the box can be removed and perhaps have repair washers brazed over the fixing holes but as I don’t know what the box looks like I don’t know if that’s possible or even sensible. Is it a big job to access the air box and is repair (rather than a £200.00? replacement) possible? Photos would help …

@ecr7 The airbox is the rear rectangular box on the LHS of the car, with the flexible pipes in and out.

A "engine panel" makes me think more of the top cover that has "1.9 TDi" moulded into it and a Skoda badge on it. Like this one

By engine panel, I meant a panel in the engine bay. The photo you posted is not of my 2006 engine installation so I don't have that rectangular box. The local test house pointed out a (the?) loose panel when the car was on the four post lift but i was only allowed a very brief  glimpse before i was ushered out from under the car (health and safety!). It was in the rear of the engine and appeared at about head to block level. If I had been allowed more time it would have been helpful!

Anyone help further on this query?

is it not possible to use either bigger bolts / screws, or maybe even glue / silicone it in place.

It is IMO not usually that difficult to deal with a vibration once the cause has been identified...................good luck.

Thanks for your response

If I knew what it looked like (hence the request for a photo) I would guess that it would be possible to braze repair washers over the now oversize holes. If that's not possible then I guess that silicone sealant would work (as you've suggested). Until I can see the airbox, I'm shooting in the dark......

Mine also has a vibration noise from engine bay and mine is at the 200,000 mile mark. 2010 2.0tdi PD 8valve with engine code BMM... you can’t feel the vibration you can only hear it and it makes the car sound “beefy” but to be honest I only noticed it after I had the clutch and flywheel replaced so I’m guessing they disturbed some pipe work or something.

Quite possibly. You may find a "clean mark" where a pipe is rubbing on a plate or casting.

Had a play this morning... the noise isnt my air box 😢
