Engine stops and wont start up for a minute or so (relay 103 or 100)

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I hope you have a great day. I own an octavia mk1 and I am having a bit of trouble with it, I will do my best to descride the provlem.

Recently the engine started stopping while running, most frequently while I am just taking off from a stop but it happened at 70km/h as well. When this happens, usually the glow plug light will flash for a while but in some rare cases the red oil light will came up as it stops, which is really strange. Also the engine will not start for a minute or so, it will crank but not start in this time.

I have read a bit on this forum about people with a similar problem and that lead me to believe it could be the relay 109, and I really thought it could be the case because when I took it off the contacts seemed oxidated. I bought a new OEM one and the problem still persists.

Previous to this, the crankshaft position sensor was replaced because I thought that might be the cause of the problem.

I am clueless right now. I think it could still be a relay problem but I cannot find the relays diagram for this model. I am not sure what is the relay 103’s role, it is quite hot to touch, unlike the others.

I hope you can help me because I really have no clue what to do now. Thanks in advnce ❤️

@Wino or @nige8021 are generally reliable with leccy stuff... but a hot relay usually aint good...

Can you provide a bit more info, like the year, engine code

Any relay when energised will get warm due to the current flow through the coil that energises it, however if it is getting more than warm this isn't normal and possibly indicates the contacts are having to pass a higher current flow than normal

Very true Nige; not on a Skoda, but I've seen a horn relay that had got so hot it had melted the insulation on the coil for the electromagnet.
