Why no electric handbrake?

People with Euro6 Engines and DSG gearboxes worried about the complexity of a handrake motor.

Anyone else see the irony? :)

And pretty much everything else in modern cars too! Silly argument. And obviously nothing ever used to break or go wrong in cars before 🙄

Working the clutch pedal, footbrake and accelerator? Why?

The autohold is no substitute for a handbrake and I don't have to dazzle people behind me.

What car are you saying it does than on?

As my signature. 2016 Octavia 1.4TSI SE manual.

Your car does not have autohold.

VAG only fit autohold on models with Electric Parking Brake.

Really? My RS doesn't have an EPB, just a good old fashioned manual one. 👍

Yep and you have Hill Hold not Autohold. No Octavia has autohold as no Octavia has EPB.

Hill Hold operates for a few seconds on an incline to stop you rolling back/forward when the brake is released.

Autohold allows you to come to a stop on any incline and immediattely release the brake. The car will just sit there, even a DSG in D. As soon as you want to move away touch the accelerator and the brakes release.

On a DSG this is sublime. Just come to a stop and take all your feet of the pedals and then press accelerator when you are ready to move.

The reason VAG only fit this to models with EPB is for safety. Autohold uses hydralic pressure on all 4 wheels but will cancel under certain circumstances such as if you haven't moved for 10 minutes, switch the engine off or open the drivers door. In the event of Autohold being cancelled the EPB is applied to prevent the car rolling away. That can't be done with a manual handbrake.

Ok, all my comments apply to Hill Hold not Auto Hold.

It doesn't work well for me. I normally  use the handbrake to enable me to release the brakes when I want to. I have tried Hill Hold, it does work if the road in front is clear.  However, if I have to abort the hill start, I then need to press the footbrake to stop the car from rolling backwards. Then, I can start the hill start all over again.

If you had EPB and Auto Hold you would not have the issues you describe.

To be honest I think the next Octavia will have EPB. all it's main rivals already do.

And to completely do away with the whole hill start situation a torque converter auto is king and many of the Octavia's main rivals are fitting torque converter auto's now including the Astra and Focus.  But that really is a whole new thread.

The autohold on the manual Cashcow, I mean Qashqai hire car (supposedly "equivalent" to an Insignia!) I drove a few weeks ago was awful. It didn't apply when coming to a halt with gentle braking and didn't release with gentle acceleration. I was constantly confused about the state of the handbrake.

Had a Manual QQ Diesel for 3 years - never had a problem with the Electric Parking Brake.

Did you have autohold turned on? With autohold turned off, trying to manually turn the the electric parking brake on and off every time I stopped was even worse.

There's always some "learning" for the driver with autohold, EPB and a manual box and maybe Nissan do not have the calibration sorted for most driving styles.

Usually these systems work better with an auto as the computers control everything.

Certainly the VAG, Jag and BMW system I've tried have been great.

Same here.

I miss the EPB so much!!! Hate that the Octy doesn’t have it but the Leon gained it in the FL. Someone has retrofitted the EPB and auto hold to a PFL Leon which can be done as there is a switch and trim for it, not so on the Octy otherwise that would accelerate to the top of my mod list. Stupid old fashioned manual handbrake does nothing but get in the way, the EPB is the future it’s one of very few features that I really wish my Octy had that I can’t add. Well, I could add it, but it’d look a bit daft as I’d have to hack something together to make it work.
