The psychology of colour choice

Featured Replies

When I was a kid in the early 50s  😞  i hankered to one day own a car the same colour blue as my favourite Dinky.

I still get the yearning flashback when a blue car is mentioned...........but of ALL the cars I’ve owned, not one has been blue!

I can only think that it’s the practical aspect of endless cleaning (never a black one either) - but the flashback keeps occurring.

(just another thought - the interiors have always been black, but if there had been the camel colour, a la the unaffordable Bentley, it might have been different)

.

Ive had two blue cars...   One was a dark twilight metallic blue that I kept for 13 years and the other I still have after 21 years (see below)...   Neither have been a chore to keep clean...

I know, it’s somewhat irrational but maybe it’s to do with a very specific version.

Too many have just been too ‘pretty’ or simply too dark.

I want my Dinky back perhaps.

Yep maybe...   They say there are certain things we long for or retain from childhood memories...   Maybe that Dinky and that blue is one of yours...

Albeit you did just buy a yellow Vitara!!

Although thinking about it I did look at a few mx5 California's which were yellow before buying my blue one and I reckon my mum's jazz, which is lurid yellow looks great...   They are both those proper bright yellow as opposed to some of the washed out ones you see on cars though...   But they ARE a bugger to keep clean!

^^^^ yeah, the solar yellow is kinda special in the sunlight.  Time will tell if it’s simply an ‘era’ colour as opposed to a classic one.

The black interior is an appropriate one for a mica black roof.

I’m interested in memories and what prompts them for you. - the mere mention of a blue Arteon gave me the instant flashback.

I love blue cars. I've had 3 inc my Race Blue VRS.

The car colour I always think of was a toy Porsche 911 I had. It was a bright metallic green looked great.

Mk1 1.8S ?? I can't recall any SE's being that shade of blue.

I remember the early F1 days of national racing colours - BRG , French Blue, Italian red, etc.

French blue or slightly darker would probably be the one for me.

Yep - Feb 1995 mk1 1.8iS in Laguna Blue - they only used the colour for a short period in 1994 and 1995 totalling about 2200 cars with only around 300 coming to the UK, if that, - so it's a vary rare colour - even more so than most of the 'special editions'....

A current favourite colour of mine (for obvious reasons) is the burning red pearlescent metallic on my Swift...

It looks lovely. The alloys and retracted aerial were indicators it was a 1.8S 😊 My first car was a ‘95 1.8S in Classic red. Such a great car but sadly a lengthy commute and starting a family forced me to sell it.

2nd Skoda was same blue as the first - same colour to save buying another touch up paint.

Never used it on that either so gave it to the new owner.

I had a Titanium MX5 with unique black seats cos the dealership decided the special edition tan ones would get their BRG one sold quicker if it had them.😞

I must be odd liking brown trim instead of ‘any colour you like as long as it’s black’.

Thanks for the comment!  My wife tried to get me to sell it when our second daughter arrived 11 years ago...   I refused...

He he...   I can understand the logic there as BRG and tan was  popular colour here...   So they were probably right!

No I'm with you. I wanted saddle brown trim in the BM but I'd had to get a new one for that. The vast majority seem to be black with the occasional red leather interior.

Brown (even dark brown) lifts the interior a lot I think, with the risk of stains but not as bad a risk as those cars with white or straw coloured interiors.

Jag and LR drivers.

I tested a jag once and I could only describe the leather (and dash) colour as 'dehydrated ****'.

The dealer decribed it as 'straw'.

I belive it may havea ctually been, 'Champagne'  - https://www.furnitureclinic.co.uk/Colour_Chart?Jaguar

Parchment is actually called Cirrus apparently.

Yep that brown and the darker one looks 'classy' - the black is 'default' and red is like a 'tarts boudoir' (my mate has a white 2 series with a red interior...   it's embarrassing!)

I remember a gorgeous Peugeot 306 cabriolet in red with camel seats and black roof  - very Ferrari.

Pfft... Cirrus? Cyan? Magenta?

I'm a bloke. Everything comes in black or maybe a dark green, if ever you have the choice. :D

I know you're supposed to only buy Ferraris in red, but even then I might break the rules and just get a black one... not that I'd ever buy one if I could afford an Aston, mind.

If you want to demonstrate just how wealthy you are you would have a yellow Faz frinstance.

(for when it’s a gloomy day......obviously)

To the extent that it's referred to as "retail red" in some circles.

I couldn’t imagine a BRG or FRB Ferrari.  For some reason the only colours I can think of are red and yellow ones.
