No oil light on startup

Featured Replies

Hi all

Have what I believe is an issue. On startup, all the usual warning lights appear, but no oil light. I'd expect a red oil light with ignition on, then quickly extinguish once the engine is started.

This is not the case.

I've done a forum search, but no answers. Any ideas?

Cheers Scott

Sorry, should have stated 2009 Octavia VRS125. Engine is cega, I believe.

Welcome & sorry no idea,

But if the system is going to check the Red Oil can light for low oil pressure then surely the Yellow Oil can light for Low Oil Level should also be checked.

Hi. First Skoda for me, so not sure of process. Neither a red or yellow oil light appear on startup.

No codes either using a generic code reader.

Could the bulb/LED be blown?

  • Author

That was a thought. I'd expect LED as the oil light can be red or orange, correct. An LED really shouldn't fail in this low usage application and it would probably be soldered on, rather than a replaceable package.

Can anyone confirm or deny?

Is there a test process to illuminate every warning light on the cluster?

Scott

It will be a surface/soldered mounted LED, With VCDS you should be able to do a instrument cluster test

You could try shorting the wire going to the pressure switch to ground, that should put the light ON

Thanks.

I don't have access to vcds, yet. But a simple short to ground is an easy test. To save a quick search, where is the switch located?

Before you rush off and desolder your instrument binnacle...........................................

The oillight does not illuminate on start up, only if the engine is running or cranking with low oil pressure, or the oil level in the sump is low, you will see it when you start or crank the engine after an oil & filter change.

Thanks.

This is some key info. And is different operation to any other car I've own.

I am doing a change this weekend. New car, cheap insurance. I'll confirm or deny at that time.

I note that you have a different engine to mine, thats what happens or rather doesn't happen on mine, like you I was suprprised that it didnt flash up on the self test.

Isn't it the other way round Nige?

Shown as normally open on the circuit, which I would interpret as the condition when the engine isn't running. When oil pressure is good (above threshold), I would expect the contact to close, shorting the wire to ground. So disconnecting the wire with engine running would give the same fault indication as a real loss of oil pressure?

Edit: RPM may also need to be held above 1500 to see a fault light come on.  I seem to remember that on some models at least, the state of the pressure switch isn't monitored below this engine speed.

Hmm got me thinking now, if it is that way around there would have to be an inverter circuit in the speedo ? as surely it's easier to have the low pressure to switch a ground to the warning light ?

I'd expect the wire to go to a processor digital input that's pulled high by a resistor.

Best to design it this way round so that broken wire gives a warning, as well as real low pressure doing so.

Yeah I was probably thinking more of the old school warning lights

Well. Did the oil change and..... Still no orange or red oil light on startup....

Mine never does it either; it's normal.

I checked different TSI's & TDI's and none had Yellow or Red oil can lights show on the 'Light test' with start up.

Thanks for all the help. Still a little disconcerting. I wonder why the change from the norm...? Or is this the new norm and I'm just old school?

In the "old" days you only had the option of hard wiring sensors to lights or functional devices. Now you can wire sensors to a central or distributed "brain" that gives the designer more options and flexibility to combine sensors outputs in logical ways.

For a simple example, my headlight washer only comes on at the fifth occasion of me using the screen washer, for another example, after I start the engine the windscreen washer will not only wipe the front screen automatically if it is raining but will also turn on the rear wiper when I put I put the car into reverse gear. [not a standard feature but is there and available if you activate it in software]

The older way of using hard wiring from sensor to function is easy to fault find but the newer way gives more user functionality at a cost of needing a computer diagnostic system to find faults - and not just in hardware but additionally in logic/software faults too.

That's progress and sometimes I feel I would rather be fault finding a Morris Minor instead of a modern car but then I remember all the many common faults on older designs that have been eliminated over the years.

I have a 2010 Octavia scout 2.0 Tdi PD engine with engine code BMM and my oil light never comes on not even when ignition only is turned on... so batt light, handbrake, airbag etc etc all light up on ignition but NO oil light. Hope that helps.
