Strange engine sound

Featured Replies

Hello,

I would like to kindly ask for help, the ingine in my  Oct II (2.0 FSI, 2006) makes a strange noise when it is cold. The sound appears for about 3 seconds and then disappears for few seconds and appears again.  It stops when the engine gets warmer (about 75 degrees of Celsius). I made a video of the engine (please see the youtube link below). It is difficult to locate where the sound comes from, but it seems it is more loud on the left side (I know it is not useful, but I am hopeless with engines). If someone has some clue what it could be I would grateful.

In my garage they were not sure and advised to ask here :-)

Any advice is much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like the engine is 'hunting' when cold. Not settled on fast idle. I take it the rev counter is reflecting this? I would think its a fueling issue. Start by giving the intake/throttle body a decent clean with some carb cleaner. Check for any vacuum leaks etc.  Has anybody run a diagnostic check to for fault codes?

Given that your garage has sent you off to a forum for advice, I dont think they're much help. You would do well do search for a more competent garage.

Thanks, I am searching for better garage indeed!

Rev counter shows does not show any fluctuations on fast idle. No diagnostics has run as no fault lights has been on but good idea, I will do so and update here.

Thanks for opinion!

Fault codes could be stored, without setting off the dreaded EML, so do get them read as it could well be the answer. I have a basic £20.00 Ebay scanner, and found that it would read codes and reset the EML. That said, when the ABS module went wrong on my MK2 VRS, my basic tool couldn't read the fault whereas my friends snap on tool did. So, do get your car scanned asap.

I am surprised you say the idle is not fluctuating, as that certainly how it sounded in your video. You could release the tension on the AUX belt, as this is on the LH side of the eninge, and see if any of the pulleys or items that run from that belt have any unusual play.

Update:

I was in another garage and no luck again. They sad it is very unusual sound and their advice was to observe it and if it gets worse then come back:-( How useful!

I also got scanner and had 2 fault codes for engine: The first one about implausible values from steering column, but the second one might be more relevant - "P000010 camshaft intake regulating too slow". Found the code explanation here:

Will discuss with the garage tmr, but your opinions are, again welcome! Thank you.

Well done for scanning the fault codes. I've no experience in that fault, sorry can't help. However, a quick google suggests you'll find lots of info on the fault to help.

Question I have for you Jan, where abouts in the world are you? The garage support in your area sounds truly woeful!
