My infotainment systems controller has packee up according skoda and they have quoted me £1400 for a new one!

Does anyone kniw what i could do ie buy a second hand one and who would fit it as skoda said they wouldnt.

 

Saying they wont fit it translates as "we dont know whats wrong, we will scare him off with the price for the most expensive bit and cover our ar5es in the event that he might say go ahead and fix it by saying that we wont do it"

 

I've just fitted a £150 Chinese head unit which seems to do all that an infotainment system does but I am a technophobe so my view is worthless, I have green teeth now, a widescreen shatnav and icons that I have no clue what to do with.

Yup plus they didnt check the car til end of day even though they had since first thing so i reckon they think they would say to me "its the controller and needs replaced and it will be £1499 to replace it and its not possible for us to to fit a 2nd hand one"

They were quick to do a health check on the car and video it even though i said it wasnt required.

 

Just want a solution as im not technolically minded

It is possible to fit a second hand one, but it’s not simple. If the radio is broken, now could be time for an upgrade if you have a MIB1. Some radios cannot be hacked to work anyway, so it’s not the end of the world to upgrade. What part number does your current radio have? It’ll be in the settings if you can access it or written on top of the radio. Failing that, post up a picture of the screen and the age of the car and I should be able to advise with the type of radio it is and the cost involved. Check my build thread out, plenty of radio info there as I’ve changed my radio twice now.

Too late to edit my post, I meant to say that I have blue teeth now but the mistake is funnyierthan the original joke would have been, plus its genuine!

The whole unit is broken as its the controller apparently so i cant switch it on etc.

My car is a octavia 2014 estate. Ill post a pic of screen tomorrow as car still at garage

 

Does it have sat nav, what size is the screen, 5.8 or 8 inches?

Yes its sat nav. Not sure about screen size. Is the control unit the dvd block that sits in the glove compartment?

Its an amundsen MIB 1 unit. The dealer claim the main control unit is behind the screen bit im sure its in glove compartment as i thought the cd/sd box was that. Not sure if i get 2nd hand one how to fit and code it

It is indeed in the glovebox, the screen is just a screen. Tbh with the cost of getting another radio plus the coding it might be a good time to install a MIB2 Amundsen for the extra features but if you don’t want to do that, I think they can code another MIB1 Amundsen to your car as the FeC’s and SWaP codes should all match up. Search for a radio with the same part number as yours, expect to pay no more than £120 for it. Personally I think it’s worth it to pay around £500 for a MIB2 Amundsen and 8 inch screen setup, I can’t help you with contacts for that upgrade

Thanks. The dealer was adamant that the main controller is behind the screen! Not fussed in upgrading to the MIB 2 tbh. I take it the part number is behind the screen so id have to take the screen off?

Yup it was the young guy who interjected my conversation saying that the control panel was behind the screen and i replied that i had heard and read otherwise! The old guy i spoke to even suggested looking on this site for advise!

No it’s on the radio itself. Some MIB1’s cannot be recoded, some Panasonic and Delphi units are impossible to re use afaik. Check the number and come back, I’ll see what I can find out about the one you have.

Where about on the radio as bewring in mind my system isnt working at all apart from the welcome to skoda sign appearing now and again

On a sticker on the top, you’ll need to pull it out and read it.

You have been told multiple times in this thread that the screen is just a screen, so... A quick summary for you:

- the dealer has no clue what they are talking about: ignore them

- there are two components for the entertainment system: the controller (looks like a 1din radio without screen, located in glove compartment) and the screen.

- the screen does nothing else than display what the controller sends and send back some button inputs.

- you need to pull out the controller (you need some special tools for this) to check the part number

 

You can buy the tools from eBay, Amazon or AliExpress - they are similar to a blade, with a triangular too and they will go on the square holes that are either side of the headunit (controller) to release it so that it can be pulled out.

@chrisski please look at @Jaco2k post above. It's a good summary. Once you have figured out if the controller unit is bust, if you decide you want a direct replacement (that requires recoding) I have one sitting in the garage (mib1 Amundsen) and the screen if needed.

 

Take a look on YouTube for vids on how to remove the units and the tools required.

 

where are you based? Someone may be able to help.

you dont need to remove the glove box to get the head unit (the brain) out. i do as i have added extra wiring at the back.

im based in central scotland. i think ill get a direct replacement. how much would you sell yours for?

To sum up further:

- you have chosen to replace the unit with like for like so you will need to know the model of the unit in the glove box (may be compatible with other mib1 Amundsen units, don't quote me on that)

- the unit will need coding to your car. Best speak to someone in the know on how to do this and for costs.

- the unit slides in and out after fitting the keys. These are removable once the unit is out or on reinstall (not needed to fit a unit, only removing)

- the reason people choose to upgrade is due to the cost of the unit plus coding. All you need to add is the screen and you may aswell fit an mib2 system.
