Auto door locking and window close deactivation

Featured Replies

Hi all, May I start by explaining what I am after. I have 2 Octi II's, same year, same spec, same everything apart from the colour.

We use the one I need help with for towing these days, as the other has done over 261k miles and is now lowered etc.... for fun!

We have an issue with the auto locking and window close function, as in, it will lock itself and put all the windows up after a while of us leaving the vehicle, we do not lock it after exiting the vehicle when away with our caravan, but the doors will lock and the windows will all shut automatically without us pressing and holding the lock button on the key! This does not happen with my other octi, and I need to change this setting as we have an elderly rescue dog and she sometimes prefers to be in the back of the car rather than in the caravan with us, strange egg, but we love her, so that is where she is happy and this is why I need to figure out why the one octi doesn't do this and the other does, I can't leave her in the car thinking that the windows could all close at any moment, especially with summer arriving!

I have VCDS and have completed many tasks using it, but I have not been trained to use it to it's full potential. I have been through most of the adaptations within cent elec etc. but nothing in there has helped, so far.

If anyone can show me how to change this simple setting it would a great day for me, as we are going away next week and with the weather warming up it will be a nightmare if the poor dog won't settle in the 'van!

Cheers all!

Craig

Not much help, but the phenomenon has been discussed quite a bit over the years. I've not seen a thread where the true answer is given though.

Quite a few people put it down to the automatic rain closing feature. When activated the sensor on the windscreen (the one that controls the automatic rain sensing wipers), when detecting rain, or moisture, will roll up the windows and close the sunroof, all in an effort to prevent the interior of the car getting wet if the car is inadvertently left out with the windows down and it starts raining without the owner realising.

Do both of your Octavia's have the rain sensing wiper feature and Maxidot?

If so try deactivating this feature...

Those with automatic wipers will testify that sometimes you get sporadic wipes of the wipers, even on a dry screen, in the height of summer.

So the theory is that these rogue activations of the rain sensing feature is behind the automatic but unwanted window closing.

According to the manual the rain closing feature is only supposed to be active with the wiper stalk in the auto position (first position up from 'off', or the intermittent position on cars without automatic wipers), but others claim their windows will close after detecting moisture, regardless of stalk position, only compounding the confusion.

Hopefully you confirm that you have automatic wipers and Maxidot, and by turning off the rain closing feature the windows stay down indefinitely.

Chances are Skoda simply added a security feature which after a set period of time (again with varying responses from members on here, some say after an hour, others 12 hours) assumes you've accidentally forgotten to raise the windows and does it for you, and your two Octavia's despite being of a very similar age, are either side of the implementation date?

Many thanks for that detailed reply! I can confirm that both the cars have auto wipers but no maxidot, they were both registered within 12 days of each other. Now you mention it, it does seem to be when it rains or condensation over night occurs that they roll up! I left them open yesterday to try it out after playing with some setting on vcds and they stayed down for hours! We do tend to leave the wiper stalk in the auto position, I'll try leaving it in the off position and try that when we are away later this week. Maybe covering the screen up or at least the sensor will help too?? Worth a try I suppose! Although quite why the one never closes the windows even with rain and auto wipers on is going to be a mystery, but that isn't the car we use for towing now, so it doesn't really matter!

Many thanks again Silver!

You could use a window vent. You know, the plastic fold up things.

Or just put something in to prevent it closing............just a thought.

Re-reading your opening post I notice you have VCDS. This means the absence of Maxidot (and therefore the option to turn off 'rain closing' via the dash menu) doesn't matter, you can turn the rain closing feature on and off using VCDS instead.

This means you will be able to retain the auto wiping feature, when it rains, and also leave the wiper stalk in the auto position, you'll just lose the feature that closes the windows if the car detects rain / overnight moisture.

It'll be in 09 Central Electronics, but I'm not sure if it'll be called rain closing in VCDS or not, you might just have to have a play with a few of the related check boxes.

EDIT:

I just founds this, it is from my old 2011 Skoda Superb, but it should give you an idea of what to look for in VCDS.

I'll have a look at that, I changed a few things in there the other day, so I may have already come across it, but probably worded differently as you say, being an older model things aren't quite as they seem when compared to later ones!

Thanks again Silver!

Thanks for this reply tilt, looked at those mesh things before but the one's I found won't stop rain getting in, I have wind deflectors fitted so that we can leave the windows ajar so it if rains it don't get the inside of the car. Wedging the windows open wouldn't work either due to the anti-pinch mechanism - the windows would feel something in the way and go 3/4 of the way down and stay there until closed manually with the obstruction removed, sometimes the deflectors drop slightly and when you put window up it sets off the anti-pinch - a bit annoying to be honest!!

No, but they / it will prevent the window closing

Again, preventing the window(s) closing on their own. Thought that is what you wanted to enable fresh air / windows open for your beloved pooch.

There was no mention of a worry of rain getting inside the vehicle. Thought you just wanted the windows not to close on their own.

I have wind / rain deflectors too, to keep rain out with windows open a touch. No issues with closing windows tho.

Sorry Tilt, I thought that keeping the rain out of a car was quite obvious, clearly not.

Thanks for the input anyway mate!

You wanted to keep your windows open for your dog, according to your first post, you didn't want them to close automatically..........

Or are you just on about leaving the windows open a tiny bit for the dog but the deflectors still keep the rain out??????????I HOPE NOT

Especially as you mention doing this through summertime / "with summer arriving".

There are laws against doing this.

As a dog lover myself i was trying to give a solution to your problem and if you are around to keep your eye on her, as i'm sure you are, and the windows are fully open then not so much a problem especially maybe if you fall asleep in the caravan??? and she is in the car.

No need to be sarcastic.

I was not being sarcastic, sorry, on reading it back I can see how you would get that, apologies!

Dog is just fine and is looked after well by myself and my wife, who is a veterinary nurse, so we are aware of the laws and exactly what our dog requires. The boot area of the car has been specially adapted with more than enough air vents and other gizmos like a webasto heater (never used), heaters work overtime in the winter when driving without the dog, however. Don't get me wrong the animal does not spend all her time in the car, just like to clear that up, just sometimes she prefers to be in the back of the car watching the world go by with the boot lid open, leaving the windows open is to let some of the doggy smells escape weather she is in there or not.

After playing with vcds the other day, I think I cracked it, windows stayed where I left them even after a few showers, so thank you both very much for your help and advice. Sorry for not explaining myself very well at the beginning, I do tend to ramble on when I get going and didn't want to leave a massive message that people would get bored of reading and give up! Thanks again!

Appreciated, and glad you sorted it.

Yes, no need to explain dog behaviour to me either, (not that you owed me an explanation). It's obvious you love her.

Barney would always prefer to sleep outside in his kennel at night rather than being indoors, come rain, shine or freezing weather.

It is still a very nice and comfy 4x3x3ft perspex fronted cage with 4 inches of foam covering the base with a mattress topper and one of my old Kingsize duvets, along with a 100w ceramic heat lamp (protected) to keep him warm on occasional freezing nights. And an extra open-ish covered play bit at the side.

The cat uses it now Lol, may Barney rest in peace.

The back door was (nearly) always open for him, with a homemade dog flap, but he'd always go out to bed. He was always at the bottom of the stairs in the morning waiting for his walk...............As you say, strange creatures..........The cat loves it.
