2.0 TDI DSG & gearbox ?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

we have 2.0 TDI DSG. Recently discovered that at D/S position I can move the gear to the left and then move it front and back. Cannot find in the manual the description for that.

What page is it on ?!?!

It's the manual mode. Kinda self-explanatory with the + and - symbols...

Yes, it allows you to select gears manually. Push forward to change up, backwards to change down.

This is first ever time I have DSG gearbox so I was assuming this is manual setting but wasn't 100% sure.

Assuming you bought your car new, the sales person you dealt with should have explained how the gearbox works and more. Even if you bought a used car, you should still get an explanation of the rudimentaries.

Pretty poor show if they didn't !!

Missing word

It’s in the handbook, on page 215 (in my book- may have changed by now):

You can also pull the stick back to switch into Sport mode, toggle it again for normal. Good for overtaking.

The DSG is quite a smart gearbox and tries to learn your driving style so it can anticipate the next gear better. It can also tell when you are going up or downhill so it changes down appropriately, though I feel sometimes that it holds a gear too long - it gets there in the end (that’s where flappy paddles are useful if fitted - but I don’t miss them)

Typo

I've never found a use for the manual mode, the gearbox is clever enough to be in the right gear 99% of the time anyway. Toggling it into Sport mode is very handy for overtaking, I use that quite a lot.

Only reason I can think of for manual mode is when driving in slippy conditions like snow or ice.  You can set the start gear to a higher gear to pull away, or keep the gear in a higher gear than normal whilst driving, to keep the revs down and help with wheel spin.  I know that you have traction control, but sometimes you do want some wheel spin when driving in snow.

You can not set the gear to a higher gear to pull away, it will be in 1st in D or S.

& More than likely you will want TC off.  You do not want the brakes getting nipped as you try to move forward or back, or power cut as you get a bot of wheel spin if you want it.

You are not able to hold a higher gear.

'S' is very handy in Aberdeen with a AWD or a FWD, you can reduce speed off the throttle shifting back to 'S' from 'D' and no need to touch the brakes,

or just do manual down shifts.

Or use Snow Mode, if you’ve got it

Elephant in the room or just sliding down a slippery slope or off camber road is what Skoda does not mention,

the fitting of rubbish OEM tyres on SUV's or Small SUV Crossovers as delivered to the UK and other world regions.

Welcome. We'll let you off with a "silly question" as it's your first. Next time you might catch some abuse  😁

I, after 125,000 miles, do not find this to be the case, at all, the DSG behaves impeccably in poor traction conditions, the same as when towing, even when exceptionally laden.

The only gremlin is the DQ200's self preservation habit of dropping out of gear, with zer warning,, and then ignoring throttle pentiometer input, when manouvering on an incline.
