1.2 hard start and low idle

Featured Replies

Trying to get to the bottom of a fault I have and realised today the engine takes longer that others to start when cold and the idle is always at about 700rpm. It use to start instantly and idle just over 1000rpm then gradually lower to 700.

Water temp rises us it always does to 90.

Could it be a coolant temp sensor issue or is there another temperature sensor for the engine?

I wonder if it could be simply a failed oxygen sensor.

I’ve noted that sometimes the ambient temperature can be sufficiently high to have the ‘cold’ start act like a warm one.

If there is no engine light coming up and consumption is normal it could simply be summer conditions perhaps.

Do you know where the oxygen sensor is located?

I know there's no MAF sensor on that engine but that's a different thing right?

1. There are two oxygen sensors, one before the cat, one after.

2. Yes that's a different thing.

Sounds like if there are no fault codes then a look at live data with diagnostics might be in order.

@mjsmke

Is your car still within the manufacturers warranty?

EDIT.

I see you are still covered under the Warranty.

Do not put off getting the car into a Main Dealership for a diagnosis, do not wait until Service time.

?

Do you have another Dealership your car can go to?

The problem is the dealer and Skoda UK doesn't want to know because there's no fault code.

I just want to get it fixed. Happy to just try changing one of the sensors to see if it makes a difference first.

I seriously advise you leave well alone. Get a professional involved, a Technician / Master Technician.

Forget this No Fault Code stuff you are getting panned off with.

If there is a fault you want it found by someone trained and qualified to do so.   Don't mess about, that can be expensive, very much so.

Have you trawled through the forum letters looking for similar problems, this can often help

and give you a firmer footing when you speak to the dealer or preferably the workshop manager

Just because there isn't a fault code doesn't mean there isn't a fault.

If there is a concern that can be proven or replicated then there is something to diagnose. Just because the engine ECU hasn't handed them a clue on the proverbial silver platter doesn't mean they can wash their hands of it. It could well be tough, but then fault finding sometimes is.

For a missfire/odd running fault on a 1.2 that isn't presenting anything obvious i'd be checking the flow quantities of the injectors and fuel pressure.

I'm getting another garage to have a look. Skoda said I can take it anywhere but they will only accept a diagnosis from another Skoda dealer.

They won't even accept a diagnosis from a VW dealer. That's what I'm trying to push with Skoda UK but their communication is appalling.

I replicated the fault for the dealer and they tried saying its a characteristic of the car. I refused to accept that. Then they said its the dsg getting ready to change gear!

Thats perfectly reasonable. Despite being part of group they are entirely different companies with different diagnostic equipment, software, support, and different billing methods.

@mjsmke

Read your Warranty , read about Skoda Authorised Network, (Approved Repairers. Official Repairers.)

Not only Main Skoda Dealerships are Approved Repairers or able to carry out diagnosis or Warranty work.

But as long as your Warranty Work does get done then fine,  the Main Dealership is working for you and the Warranty Provider, and not doing a favour.
