Constant droning while stationary

Featured Replies

Strikes are on again at work, consequently its a 2.5 hour stop start journey over 9 miles. Last time I noticed that with the engine off and sat stationary (i.e. in park, with ignition on and stop start stopping the engine) there is a continuous drone, which continues for the full journey even when the engine restarts. Ive tried the usual noise makers (air con, radio etc) and its driving me and my passengers mad.

Im thinking its oil circulating through the turbo for cooling? Or something to do with the GPF?

Car is a 2019 VRS TSI for reference. Any ideas?

Cooling fan or as you say turbo cooling.

Should it be going for 20 minutes at a time? So annoying!

Well if you're in start stop traffic the cooling fan will be going nuts because there isn't enough air movement across the radiator for passive cooling.

Yeah, my 220 didnt seem to be so noisy with it, nor did any of my other cars. Temperature is normal at the time, it seems to do it after every journey which again I dont remember my other VRS doing. Wouldnt be so bad if the noise wasnt so intrusive :D

My old B5.5 Passat diesel had twin electric fans for cooling and air conditioning.  They both kicked in once ,when I was queing to book into a French camp site, around 40C iirc. Monsieur ordered me to shut down as I was disturbing the peace. Not heard such a ruckus or any loud noises again, while stationary,  diesel or petrol.

I'm wondering how we got to reply #6 before that was said.

This site has changed.

SWMBO was asleep iirc, the noise inside the cabin was not too loud and a cool breeze was needed. When I shut the engine down everything went quiet.

It's harsh but oh so true... I solved it by leaving her at home unless absolutely necessary. Droning stopped.

I was about to post a joke about changing turning Radio 1 off or some such, but scrolled down and was beaten to it and by a better joke :giggle:
