Test-drove a new Toyota MR2 yesturday

Featured Replies

Yup the last one on the list. Others on the list include the Mazda MX-5 and the Smart Roadster for those that haven

can you cut my hair please;)

Nice review, nice car too. I Couldn't have one though cus my best mate is very fat and there would be nowhere to keep his pies....

Looks nice, but I wouldn't go for something like that unless I could get one in the region of 180-200hp, such as a Celica GT4 type setup.

I like it. :) but it lacks the practicality of the furby.

They are cool but as i said on MSN what storage??? @If you don't need it then MR-S would be my choice  And grey and silver  Commendable choice Jimbob Ladies Clothes Wearer.

go for it , really nice car looks better than the mx5. only young once. whats the insurance group?

 you lads and your cabrios, you're really trying to make me drool aren't you

I love the MR2 and it will be a serious contender for my next car when I really cannot cope with no longer having a cabrio (probably by the end of May I reckon ;) ) That's of course if it has better visability than the TT Roadster which is shocking!

Don't forget Walkie, you said I could drive it :D

:gay:

:D

:D

Says it all really ;)

You go for it Walkie - and fingers crossed that it doesn't p!ss it down all summer! :P

Steve

Anyone who's ever owned a cabrio will know that you get so much more use of the roof down than just summer (if you're hard enough ;) ) Just remember to put the heater down to your tootsies and you will be toastie

Cool.

I'd enjoy a car of that sort but I just don't fit in any of them.

Have you had an insurance quote yet?

I'd agree entirely, and would do the same if I ever ended up with such a car. If it's not raining, hood down and wooly hat on! :D

Steve

Why worry about rain, I dont. Today it was raining and the Boxsters hood was down. You dont get wet if you keep above 30mph, strange feeling having the wipers on and being dry inside.

Walkie, nice car the MR2 but as you spotted space is a problem. Dare I say it, go and try an older boxster. You should be able to get a newish 2.7 for 17k. Plenty of boot space, you have two of them to choose from. One large boot in the front, and one slightly smaller one in the back. Insurance is suprisingly cheap, I have the more powerful 3.2 and pay well under 1K fully comp.

Yeah, considering my age it is never going to be great though :o

I am currently paying

Go for it Walkie - as long as I can have a spin.

All your car hunting has got me yearning for something without a roof and that actually handles. May well just have to get an old MX5 or something myself.

But whats the MPG like ?? ;)

Those seats look almost like those in the Honda S2000, which can only be a good thing.

Hi Walkie

Sounds like you enjoyed it then? Be careful comparing old and new. At some stage in the last couple of years the suspension was modified to make it a bit tamer, but old ones are still very very good, just a little trickier at the limit. Careful about changing alloys as well. Much of the handlings tactility and delicacy come from the correctly matched wheel / tyre / chassis combination.

Excellent write up:thumbup:

Chris

Very good point Chris about alloy changes. I'd maybe just restrict the search to larger, optional, MR2 alloys? Possibly have a drive out in one fitted before commiting?

Steve

Walkie, get a copy of the recent EVO magazine. Its got a red Ferrari, a Zonda and Lambo on the cover. Has a few pages on the MR2 and mentions the handling tweaks etc..

Yep, Evo Issue 90, April 2006. Can do you a scan of the relevant info if you like.

Steve

I switched from Fabia vRS to MR2 roadster back in December. You won't regret it. If you have any questions give me a shout. Also try mr2roc.org for info.

I get 35mpg on long runs and 28-30mpg when driving like a nutter.

Thanks for your comments

I bought EVO all I thought it had was a little write up about the MR2, didnt see anything about tweaks etc  well I left it in the office, will check tomorrow.

I did think about the alloys, it would be pretty pointless changing them for aesthetics if it will ruin the handling, need to do a little research before buying, perhaps buying some lighter alloys?

I followed an MR2 today, Walkie - you need to change the feeble exhaust too!

Funny you should say that. Exhaust (other than alloys) is smack bang right at the top of my list.

Second hand Boxster like Manny's is similar price range

Or isn't the salon doing that well? ;)

Nice car and I actually fit in it :D
