Starting problem 1.9 tdi Elegance 2004

Featured Replies

Firstly hello to you all, and hopefully there will be a few of you who can advise me on my current issue?

Car is low mileage, 58k and all has been ok, save a few minor issues. Car has started 1st time, everytime. 4 weeks ago I noticed a slight lag on acceleration going through 2,3 and 4th gears, but other than that, no issue.

Yesterday, started ok, drove to work as normal. However, when I tried to drive home, it would not start. It went through the motions of trying to start, but cut off after a second. No warning lights remained on. After 4 to 5 atempts it started fine, and ran fine (no warning lights).

Fired it up this morning and started 1st time. But having turned off and tried restarting, I've had the same issue of not starting. It took me 5 attempts before starting. Now, whilst I'm not a mechanic, I think that I can rule out the starter motor, right or wrong?

Could the lag issue and the new fault be linked?

Are there any tests that I could do, visual or other wise to find fault issue?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Jock

'Suppose first thing to do ( if you have a code reader e.g. VCDS ) is to scan for fault codes and then work from there.

Given the age and low mileage it may well be that the inlet tract & EGR are gunked up and the turbo vanes are sticking.

With regard to the poor starting, I've seen something similar which turned out to be due to the ASV sticking - degunking the inlet tract fixed that one.

Thanks for that.....think that's a step too far for my mechanical know-how 👍

Hard to tell without diagnostic..but this Sounds me Like imobilizer Isue..IF car start and die after 2-3 second then iz must be imobilizer ...IF there od NO eror vode on diagnostic then check values Like start permited? Engine Ecu blocked bY imm o..can be key chip, dash, realy without diagnostic there od no way to ne sure..try few drives with youre spare key..yust to exclude keychip failure

Well, my initial thought was immobiliser (OK, actually key) fault too.  Do you still have the 2 plips? If so, do you actually know if you're always using the same one?
