Shoddy Windscreen Replacement

Featured Replies

Hello all, first post on here but been using the site for ages for great ideas and advice.

So I had to have a windscreen replacement with autoglass. It’s fine as only had to pay a small excess. The new one fitted is Pilkington not manufactured brand. I’ve noticed that where the ADAS cameras and sensors are fitted to the windscreen are very different to how it should look like and I’ve been down to autoglass to see another one and this is how they’re made by the company. I think it looks very naff, anyone else had any experiences like this? Is it worth trying to get a Skoda one through insurance company? The cameras shouldn’t be bonded to the windscreen like this, you shouldn’t even see the bonding, let alone how scrappy the lines are!

Thanks in advance

What a complete mess,

Yeah that’s horrible. Take that further.

How old is the car? If it less than 3 years old you can request a genuine one or pay the difference. They should have informed you about it like they did me.

It will have been bonded before on the old screen, I'm assuming they have re-used your old camera and surround, correct me if I'm wrong. They should have used black PU bonding adhesive though and not grey, the black dot pattern screen printed on the screen is to hide the bond line if black were used.

I sympathise with the fitter, the stuff goes off so quick in the cartridge that I am often faced with the same choice.

They should at the very least redo it with the correct colour adhesive.

Personally bond line and colour aside I still think it looks a total mess with the huge housing, sensor and camera visible from outside but having to look at the grey Sikaflex would send me over the top!

The car is 4 years old so out of warranty and the guy said today that the insurance company won’t be interested in helping. The guy showed me another identical windscreen today that they had in encase they had to replace mine, it comes fitted from Pilkington with the lane change assist camera surround already on it and already bonded on. I looked at a load of other windscreens for different cars they had though and none looked like this. He said there was nothing he could do today as the windscreen is sound and fitted properly. I’m going to complain to autoglass and contact the insurance company anyway, something like this would put people off buying the car should I ever sell it, but more importantly it’s driving me crazy

This is how it looked before it went in

I wouldn't accept that.  IMO you are doing the right thing discussing with the fitter and then contacting the companies involved.

Good luck.

There's no way I would accept that either.

Bloody hell.   If anyone thought that was acceptable, I'd be tempted to put a brick thru it and get another windscreen.

A complete mucking fess IMO. Persevere with getting that replaced.  Good luck.

Just an update, Autoglass called me today after I sent a long complaint and they’ve ordered an OEM windscreen in and will fit that... I’ll be happy when I see it on and looking good again!

That's a disgrace.  Glad they are going to rectify it for you.
