Is it time to say goodbye

Featured Replies

After two Yeti’s and 6 years of wonderful motoring with them, is it time for a change, head and heart currently in conflict.

At the start of the year I had indented to pay the balloon payment when due in September and keep the car for a further 18 months until the car was 5 years old. So I fitted 4 new Michelin cross climate tyres back in February just before MOT and took out an extended warranty with ŠKODA for a further 12 months. I’m still going to settle the balloon payment in September, but for the last month or so have been looking at options. Nothing currently ticks all the boxes like the Yeti does, but my one regret with my current Yeti was I did no go for the DSG at the time, finances would not quiet stretch that far.  Have driven a VW T Cross DSG and really loved the drive.

There are many things I like about the Yeti particularly the lift out rear seats and heated windscreen, which I would loose on the T-Cross.

The car that ticks all my boxes would be the Karoq, although a little bland looking from the outside, prefer the look of the Ateca, plus both are a little big for my current needs.  Therefore the Kamiq could be a possible, but waiting on spec and prices.

Trade in offers for Yeti are not brilliant, and local VW discount is minimal, currently looking at web options to see if better deals on T-Cross.

I don’t need to change, but sometimes you fancy a change, I can afford to change, but do I want to start the depreciation cycle again, decisions, decisions........!!!

Hmm I can see both sides on this one.  I got my Yeti last year and have enjoyed it.  I tested a few others (and looked at a lot more!) before picking it and found that the second hand Yeti was the best for driving position/comfort, size, features, price, reliability, and, most importantly the quality of drive it gave.  So I plan on keeping mine for quite a few years yet as I'm very happy with it, and couldn't find something that ticked more boxes at the price.  However if you've had it for while I can see the temptation to change for something different.

As you are not being forced into deciding quickly I'd suggest making a list of the cars currently on the market that you think might be suitable and then doing some more test drives.  You may find that the grass on the other side isn't greener, or tastier, but just somewhere else.   For it's size, the drive you get, the comfort, and the practicality, means a Yeti is still tough to beat.

Even though I've recently retired and a diesel makes even less sense than before (based on mileage) I would be happy keeping the Yeti for a few more years. Every time I see one (currently in France on holiday and saw a couple over the last week) I think what a great car. I love driving it and the space etc.

But once the seed has been planted, in my case to change to petrol and to an auto, it is difficult to not follow through!

Whichever way you look at it cars are a big and continuing expense and arguments can be had for both sides, changing regularly or keeping longer term. But as you can afford it just go with what you fancy, there is no right or wrong.

I'd recently put a set of Cross-Climates on as well and paid off the balloon payment in February as the intention was to keep it but am now getting a Volvo XC40 for something completely different but still a practical SUV.

Whilst very useful I won't miss the lift out seats of the Yeti, too heavy and cumbersome as you get older. The Volvo has a nice big flat load area just by dropping the rear seats. I agree that the Ateca (the front) looks better than the Karoq.
