Dark reflectors

Featured Replies

Hi , I’m new here, so please forgive me if I mess up this post. I recently de-badged and fitted darker Superskoda corner reflectors.

I hope the attached pictures work! 😀

Welcome B)

Welcome, indeed.  But I don’t understand:  why make the reflectors worse at doing the safety job for which they were designed?

But they’re not any worse at reflecting.

As Kenny R says, they still reflect. I just don’t like them standing out so much. I did the same to my previous car (Jag S-Type) . Very much a personal taste thing though. 😎

Warning! More little mods maybe forthcoming! 😀

Sounds a similar idea to having darkened rear lights and indicators! A few weeks ago I was driving down the M1 in torrential rain with headlights, rear high-intensity lights and fog lights on so I could be seen safely, when I was passed by a BMW with darkened rear lights. After a few yards he was completely invisible!

Careful, improper use of fog lights has been known to divide opinion on public forums!

The Kodiaq ins't fitted with rear high-intensity lights, just a rear fog light.

Yes I’m firmly in “fog lights- the clues in the name!” Camp. 😄

Darkening the head lights and tail lights is a step too far for me, I believe the reflectors are generally intended for the benefit of leaving the car parked on the street. And these dark ones still do that.

He did say "torrential rain" which should be OK?  My understanding was that you can use them in the UK when visibility due to fog - but also heavy rain, sleet/snow - reduce visibility to < 100 metres?

In Ireland, the rule (Road Safety Authority website) says " Fog lights must only be used if you cannot see more than 100 metres in front of the vehicle (about 25 car lengths) in dense fog or falling snow."

In reality, this seems to be interpreted as "I paid for these babies so I'm damned well going to use them!" Their brains are in a dense fog anyways so I guess it is understandable....

I told you not to open the can!! :D

In my opinion for the crazy torrential downpour that happens less than a handful times a year, rear fogs are OK to use. I will however turn them off once somebody gets remotely close to me. If I can prevent an accident due to someone being able to see me from a further distance, then I reckon it’s worth it.

Bright red fog lights and rain are not a good mix. The wet surface on the lens and windscreens make the fog lights dazzle drivers behind you. If you also have 2 rear fog lights, they not only dazzle, but it is harder for the following driver to see your brake lights when applied, as they can just blend into the bright red fog lights you already have on. Read silver 1101 post above, the answer to the question is stated there.

Silver’s screenshots says fog lights are not allowed to be used when visibility is not reduced. In my use case I mentioned torrential downpour i.e. causing heavily reduced visibility. Section 226 of the Highway Code stipulates that “you must use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).” visibility seriously reduced" is not just when it's foggy.

They obviously aren’t stipulating the need to use fogs in those cases, however it is permitted. All the cars I own have one fog light, so I have no worries about people mistaking my rear fog light as brake lights. Now if people actually drove to the conditions and weren’t so distracted nowadays, I wouldn’t bother...but as we all know, there are some real idiots out on the road.

I agree they Make the darker cars look a lot better

The downside for me is that I'm quite familiar with the way the Kodiaq looks now, so things that make it look different stand out quite a bit.

The missing red reflectors make black Kodiaq's look a little Knight Rider, which is great if it brings back fond childhood memories, but at the same time it's all a little too 1980's for me...

There is a reason major manufacturers break up large swathes of the same colour using the light clusters, chrome, contrasting colours etc.

Black paint, tinted windows, black alloys, darkened light clusters, all at the same time on the same car, it's a little too much for me.

But each to their own, if we all liked the same things life would be boring.

Ticked all the boxes , you would absolutely hate my car 😂

Hate is a strong word.

I've only ever seen two Kodiaq's I'd use the hate word to describe :D

Perhaps this is not the best place or moment to show my new Kodiaq 😉

This includes smoked rear reflectors as well as a light smoke tint for headlights and rear lights.

Should post some more pictures in a new thread or your original thread

I assume you've wrapped the roof and A-pillars too?

Either that or wrapped

the rest of the car red 😂

Yes, had some work done at the detailer; gloss black wrap for A-pillar, roof, roof rails and window trims. Some dark/black parts from superskoda: front and back logo’s, lettering on the boot, dark reflectors, black mirror caps and black grille. Also a light smoke tint on the lights in the front and back and tinted windows. Finally a full detail and glass coating. From the factory this is a 2.0 TSI Style (not a sportline)

It also visited a company to add the Adaptive Cruise Control as the dealer ordered the wrong car (normal cruise control). All in all it took quite some time. Car was ordered in May 2018, delivered in April 2019. Fixing the dealer mistake took another two months, then two weeks for the detailer. This means I only got the car in July 2019. But I am very happy with it.

Very nice, I think the black lettering works well on the red paint. 😎
