Diesel "pinking"

Featured Replies

Never having used a forum before, I apologise in advance should I err.

My question is this:

I recently purchased a Yeti Greenline Tdi with which I am very impressed. However I am bewildered by the fact that the engine "pinks". Having owned over 30 cars during my time, I am well aware of what pinking is, and that it is usually found on older petrol-engined cars. I have owned numerous diesel cars (mostly Skoda) in the past and have never heard one of them make this noise. Enquiries from local diesel specialists have produced suggestions like not buying fuel from a certain supermarket chain, the timing belt being one tooth out (!), or adding some fuel additive. One person informed me that it is something to do with a "pilot pulse" fuel injection system.

All I want is to know is how to cure this fault to prevent premature damage to the engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The vehicle has not been subject to any recalls or software updates.

First step would be to get it scanned for fault codes and check the ECU is running the latest software.

At a guess, it could be a timing or injector issue? What age is it and do you know when the cambelt was last done?

So it has not had the fix then?

What revs does it "pink"?

I owned a 2014 2.0L Diesel Yeti from new. It experienced a diesel knock from day one. Unless engine temp was up to 85/90c [from memory] then under fairly hard acceleration this happened. Annoyingly my morning trip needed a few revs due to pulling out uphill onto a busy dual carriageway.

Twice the vehicle went into the dealers for a full diagnostic and nothing was found to be wrong. I sold the car at just under 5yrs old with 37K on it and no problems.

Not only swift replies, swift enough for you not to give any answers to questions!

My diesel Yeti used to "pink" slightly under moderate acceleration but after that I always ran it on BP and Shell's high performance fuel (mainly for the additives) and it purred along after that.

As suggested though, if yours is serious, best to get it checked out.
