very loud squeaking brake nose, when braking softly

Featured Replies

Hello all,

unfortunately, the brakes on my S2 MJ12, 170 hp DSG are squeaking.

I had cars with squeaking brakes, but these were quite silent, a harder brake now and then got rid of that.

Unfortunately not this squeak.

It squeaks most often at the end of each trip (warm brakes?). It squeaks, when I brake softly, when attempting to stop at a red crossing or a turn. The squeak stops, if I brake softer, the squeak stops, when I break harder.

I already hit the brakes quite hard, but it did not change anything.

It is a very loud squeak and very annoying unlike the other squeaking brakes I had. I do not see any grooves on the brakes through the tires, just dark dust. I do not hear any crunching noise which would indicate worn brakes.

Does somebody know where that could come from?

Some possibilities: scored disks; misaligned pads; warped disks; sticking slide pins on the caliper.

I had similarly screechy brakes a while back. After a service tech had flagged them for being rusty, and also because the pad position looked a bit weird, I changed the disks and pads and I've had no issues since.

As a first attempt before you go spending a lot of money, it might be good to pop the pads out and give the caliper a good clean and look over. Put some copper grease on the back of the outer pad before reassembling. It also gives you a good look at the pads for any signs of uneven wear. Also check the disk for any cracks or scoring.
