Diesel down or out? A Superb problem to have...

Had to laugh when jrw said he could get 35mpg from his Golf R but usually averages 24mpg. My lighter front wheel drive Octavia Vrs245 has averaged 40mpg over 24,000 miles with a best of 48mpg on a run. Oh and it has almost 336bhp and top speed is higher than a standard Golf R.

Go on the VWROC forum - this is normal.  4WD being the main culprit, DSG being the other.  Mine also has 375BHP 🤣

You can get good MPG on the smaller turbo'd 2.0TSI's as I mentioned with my dad's GTI.

Fair enough didn't realise you were running stage 1 map.:thumbup:Mine can do 526 miles on 50 litres of 99 octane V-Power.:o

Wasn't much different without it tbh!  The 4WD kills the mpg.  Plus when I am on a run in it its usually fully loaded.  I did manage 42mpg driving Miss Daisy on a 50mile round trip the other week just to see what I could get.  I don't think you could get any higher than this in a Golf R unless you are downhill with a prevailing wind!  Probably get better once its run in - its only on 6500 miles 😁

Back on topic I averaged 45mpg when I had a 2015 Vrs TDi DSG with a best of 66mpg on a long run (181bhp standard).;)

Good to see opinions from the industry here:

https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/consumer-news/98747/diesel-ban-the-future-of-diesel-cars-in-the-uk-and-beyond/page/0/1

In particular from BMW - Through this, we want to strengthen people’s trust in our diesels. But it would also be helpful if the discussion about nitrogen oxides and particulate matter was based more on reality and facts.

Most mention that diesels are needed to contribute to the reduction in CO2

That is about what I was getting 45-48mpg until I had my family friend mechanic do my 60k service the other week.  Its jumped right up to 52-56mpg on my commute (It differs due to routes I take due to traffic) simply by changing the fuel filter (this was changed last year by Skoda apparently when it was still under lease) and chucking a bottle of injector cleaner into the housing.  The difference is phenomenal in MPG and performance but that is another topic for another thread!

:) talking about dirty cars, lets keep it clean :) The past is the past.

I've called about 20 dealers this last 2 weeks. Almost all of them have slipped the would you consider a diesel question in. None will budge on the inflated price though.

So they are risking being stuck with 28/9k cars when a 280pt is sitting at 26/28k, same age, same miles.

Is diesel dead? Of course not, no getting rid of it this decade or next. It might be taxed/priced out of favour. I agree euro6 is not euro 3,4 or 5. Thing is no one knows the future, it's all a gamble.

If a barrel of crude goes north of 100, diesel will be advantageous. That or walking more.

If clean ship diesel takes capacity, then diesel will inflate more, leaving the 'saving' in £$ and p, less and less.

All said and done, tootling up a motorway, a 190d or a 200p do the same job :D

@jrw very true on the 4x4 stealing fuel. My old mkII superb drank more than a FWD sister. Wasan't quite as nippy, till the remap either. Then of course the 'damp' days where a normal driver might recover some fuel savings by tip toeing, I didn't... so that didn't help my paper averages.

A certain goverment agency responsible for the environment has no diesels on there company list now. all petrol, some ev. But no ev charging on office sites ;)

I'm aamazed no one has made a EV that simple has a diesel generator on the front. I think some one may of done a petrol one in the US, I want to say it was called a volt...

Wouldn't change the 4x4 for anything though!

And this is what I mean about diesels getting bad press, companies taking them off their lists, its madness.  If you get a fuel card too they'll soon be paying the price of that with the massive fuel bill increase.  Did the same with us at old company - went from Hyundai i40 1.7TDI to BMW 330e for us managers...only 5 of them but the people that didn't charge them essentially had an uneconomical petrol and were getting 35mpg.  I religiously charged mine wherever I could and got 53mpg over the 37k I had it but because of fuel cards people didn't bother and then got moaned at about the fuel costs.  Great for tax purposes from an employee point of view, but not from the companies point of view.  I highly doubt they will get replaced with hybrids next time which is a shame as they were good cars and the new ones should be better.

BMW i3 had the range extender version but this has now being dropped.  Can't imagine a diesel range extender would be perceived by the Daily Mail reading public as a good idea.  Guess the idea is good in theory but suppose costs and improvements in battery tech outweighs it even though the UK's charging infrastructure is currently woeful.

I have a VW ID.3 on order but may cancel it unless the network is improved enough by next summer to make it viable.  Primarily ordered it because there are 28 charging points at my work and 2 at SWMBO work, effectively meaning free "fuel" for commuting but my folks moved to Torquay a couple of months ago to an apartment and there are literally no fast charging units anywhere near where they are.  I can't even run an extension out their window as they are on 1st floor with a garden between them and the garages and the garages don't have electric!
