New hard drive time

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I need to obtain a new Western Digital hard drive for a machine that has failed on me, and I have located one on two different web sites, as my local PC store has thrown in the towel and closed down.

One is Novatech, the other is Scan Computers.

If anyone has dealt with either, your comments on their service, good or bad would be gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Phil

I’ve dealt with both a while ago and nothing was amiss.

Scan are relatively local to us, have been trading for years and have a good reputation for price and quality.  Sorry, no experience of Novatech.

Just in case, did you take a look at Amazon and fleabay? They can be pretty competitive.

Has to be a Western Digital? Why restrict yourself to one brand? Samsung, Kingston, Crucial, Seagate are all also good makes. Ebuyer are pretty good to buy from.

Any 3.5 inch HDD in a desktop or 2.5 inch in a laptop will get the job done. I just replaced a WD HDD in a laptop with a Seagate 5400RPM SATA II unit. Have replaced a couple of internal HDD in the past with Solid State drives, transforms an ageing laptop.  The Seagate 1Tb HDD I bought last week was £35.95 from Amazon.

Novatech used to have a branch near me. They were very expensive and a bit snobby.

Scam are thus nicknamed for a reason.

They sometimes have competitive pricing, more often on their Amazon and eBay stores rather than their own website. But if anything is wrong with your order, it can often be a right pain in the backside to get sorted out.

I favour Overclockers UK, myself, as they usually go the extra mile for you. You sometimes end up with the Saturday Boy, though, in which case you just ask for their manager. I also get free postage with them.

I used to live and work near Novatech, they were always my "go to" PC supplier and I've never been unhappy.

Even though I now have to mail order I still look at them first.

Cheers guys, very useful info.

Going to pull the trigger today, feel a bit more confident with the feedback now.

Many thanks

Phil.

Ditto.

Have also dealt with Ebuyer lots which despite a bad reputation I've never had an issue with.

I think for my last build most of it came from Amazon.

If you're looking for an SSD and have a little bit of time try UKHotDeals, they'll regularly list deals on components.

I've also bought from Crucial.com direct. I've a Crucial 1Tb SSD in this PC right now.

No problems with Novatech. Apart from one delivery caused by the courier ,who is no longer in business (City **nk) ,who swore they'd knocked ,but in those days the dog alerted me if anyone passed through the gates. Then in office they had "problems" finding the parcel.

I had a HDD from them

There's also Aria ( https://www.aria.co.uk/)

Based in Manchester ( or close by). But for me, not for HDD. I & son have had problems with their HDD, but it's possibly a heavy handed courier.

But as others have said- why not upgrade to a SSD.
