When selecting speed 1 from switch on it does not always start the fan especially annoying when I need a gentle breeze of aircon. I select speed 2 and turn it back to speed 1 and it maintains speed 1 without trouble. It it was the resistor would it not kill all speeds apart from speed 4 which is max? Would a squirt of switch cleaner solve the problem?

A good electrical contact cleaner should work.
