Apple Car Play

Featured Replies

Hi folks

I'm new to the world of Skoda and have recently bought a two year old Kodiaq.  I'm about 2000 miles in after my first month and love the car so far but I've a few niggling things I'm hoping you'll advise on.  I'll post them separately for the sake of clarity.

So, number 1:

It appears that for Apple Car Play to work it has to be connected via the USB charging cable.  I am surprised it cannot be done over Bluetooth.  I don't want to plug the cable in as it is messy and I am forever charing my new iPhone which will knacker the battery eventually.

I am using Car Play as I continuously use Waze when driving as the inbuilt Sat Nav doesn't have live traffic data and is therefore fairly useless.

Am I missing something or is there some work around to get Waze displayed on screen via Bluetooth?  Or is there a way to get reliable live traffic to the inbuilt Sat Nav?

Oh, and why are there at least three 12V chargers around the car and only one USB that I can see?  12Vs are fairly obsolete now with most everything running on USB.

Thanks

Steve

Apple CarPlay on the Kodiaq can only be connected by USB cable.

You can get traffic information as good as Waze on the built in SatNav by renewing your subscription to Infotainment Online (https://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/skoda-connect) *and* giving the car a data connection to the Internet (by plugging in a SIM card or using personal hotspot on your phone). You can get a data SIM from Three that will give you 200MB of data a month for free, which is plenty to provide the car with traffic information. However, in my experience the built in SatNav does not make good use of the traffic information (it doesn’t seem to build it in to the predicted ETA when you first set off) and does not provide alternative routing to the same standard as Waze, Apple Maps or Google Maps.

Apart from very few exceptions in only the latest cars, all CarPlay connections have to made via USB, regardless of the car manufacturer.

Modern battery technology can handle repeated charging cycles without damaging the battery, so you don't need to worry about this.

There's no way to view Waze on screen via bluetooth.

I can't comment on getting live traffic updates to the built in satnav as it's something I've never needed to do. I use CarPlay as the routing, updates, and live traffic options are all far better in compatible apps like Google Maps, Waze, TomTom, and even Apple Maps at a push...

You can buy very discreet 12v adapters that convert the socket into almost stock-looking flush USB sockets if you want more of them around the car. There are still many in-car appliances that need access to the standard 12v socket and won't run via lower voltage USB.

Thanks to both above.  Seems I'm stuck with it.  Just seems weird that you can connect your phone via BT for calls, tunes etc but not to do what I want.

Had heard the Infortainment isn't quite up to par with traffic so will carry on with Waze.

Will go over to Amazon now to check out a 12V/USb adapter.

Cheers

Steve

Bluetooth doesn’t have nearly the bandwidth required to operate CarPlay. Wireless CarPlay uses Wi-fi. For whatever reason pretty much only BMW group seems to have wireless CarPlay on sale in cars.

VW MIB3 now supports Wireless CarPlay.

This one is for wireless apple carplay in Skoda

I got this one for my Kodiaq, and it works great.

My Q7 has wireless CarPlay so I’d guess Skoda will release it for the facelift Kodiaq.

I love Carplay and use it for Google Maps on most journeys so I'm delighted such a gadget exists but for £124 I think I'll be plugging in a cable for a while yet.

How reliable is the connection and does it support all the Apps/features you get with a wired connection?

I presume your iPhone connects to this dongle via WiFi and not Bluetooth due to bandwidth required.

MIB 3 units on Scala and new Rapid / Octavia has inbuilt wireless Carplay / Android Auto.

Hi Winston_Wolf

It works great.

It uses a WIFI connection, and it connects shortly after the car is startet.

The connection is very stabil.

I can use all Apps, like wenn you are using a cable.

Pity there is no such thing for Android phones.
