1.9 PD. Smoke on cold start and poor MPG

Featured Replies

My 1.9 PD has done 170k now.

On a dead cold engine start, often there is a cloud of grey smoke from the exhaust for roughly 5 seconds. Sometimes there is a noticeable wobble on idle, although not always.

It never seems to do it when the engine is already warned up or has been used within the last few hours.

If I start driving straight away, the smoke disappears. When driving, even with my foot hard down there doesnt appear to be any noticeable smoke in my rear view mirror.

I've also noticed an increase in fuel consumption lately. Running on level ground at 60mph before the instant mpg readout would easily be in the 60s.

Now I have to really feather the throttle to get it to even stay in the 50s.

I have vcds. What would be a good place to start investigating?

I have read fuel injector seals can have this affect, but can I even prove that with vcds?

I don't want to start replacing parts unnecessarily.

Have you checked the glow plugs?

  • Author

They were all changed for genuine Bosch ones 18 months ago.

Come what may; your title and OP made me immediately think "glow plugs". You have changed the plugs themselves, but have you continuity tested the wiring?

  • Author

The glow plugs were changed by a vag specialist.

2 showed as faulty before so I got all 4 done.

I'll post a full autoscan shortly.

Here is the scan.

I have just checked the glow plugs with a multimeter.

All 4 plugs have 0.6ohm resistance between the tip of the plug and the engine block.

  • Author

This is measuring block 13 on the engine just after a cold start - the engine had been off since 6.30 this morning.

-0.45  -0.19  0.33  0.33

After a few minutes idling these are the figures.

-0.35  0.07  0.09  0.16

It won't let me upload the screenshots annoyingly

I think I'll run a can of Liqui Moli Diesel Purge through the system.

Am I right in thinking the bottom two pipes on top of the fuel filter housing are what go in the can, and the top 2 connect together to send the fuel from the pump back to the tank?

IMG_20190813_100147.thumb.jpg.b13a9ea7859284cfb09c369bd2d3d0cc.jpg

I've got no idea about the fuel filter I usually just stick my injector cleaner or fuel booster into the tank

  • 1 month later...
  • Author

So a few months later, I'm still getting poor MPG.

I ran a can of Liqui Moli Diesel Purge by bypassing the fuel filter, and that seems to have cured the smoke on cold start however.

I gave the MAF a clean with some proper MAF clever. Still the same.

Running with it disconnected is also the same.

I ran some logs on vcds and on a 15 mile run EGR requested Vs actual was within 2% and boost requested Vs actual was within 6%.

Any idea where to start looking next?

I find that the component that most affects MPG is the one between the throttle pedal and my right ankle. ;)

Seriously, the most I've got is that the MAF seems to be OK.

  • Author

I also forgot to mention I checked the brakes again this morning.

After a 15 mile drive of barely touching the brakes, the hubs, discs and calipers were stone cold.

I doubt it's my driving style as even feathering the throttle at 60mph on a flat road the instant consumption hovers around 51. Before it would easily be in the 60s.

could it be a faulty sensor showing high fuel consumption rather than actual consumption.

Pen and paper check will show actual MPG against readings.   ie full tank to empty tank = xxx miles, / fuel ( gallons or litres ).

  • Author

I am definitely getting less mileage from a full tank.

Next time I fill up I'll work it out properly.

  • 2 weeks later...
  • Author

So after filling it up, actual mpg is 41.8.

Trip 2 was showing 49 average, but that hasn't been reset in a long while.

I've reset trip 2 this time and will compare it directly to actual next time I fill up

On my Superb I the mpg on the trip computer seemed to drop - however the real life tank to tank remained the same. Actual consumption depends on driving style but a real life 60mpg on a DSG ps seems too high.

I'd be more concerned about some of the electrical gremlins shown on your scan above - sometimes weird readings can be due to a failing battery (usually shows up in the electrical power steering first as it's a high current draw device).

If the car runs the same with MAF plugged in and unplugged I would say the MAF is no good, it should run better on a good MAF than without one plugged in

  • Author

I know that P1696 is related to my faulty cruise control stalk

I've just fitted a new MAF. Will see how it goes.

  • 2 weeks later...
  • Author

So the results are in.

New maf has been fitted for a full tank.

There is no noticeable difference in the way the car drives with old MAF, no MAF or the new maf.

I reset trip 2 last time I filled up.

That said 46.2 average.

Calculated based on mileage covered... 39mpg.

I may as well have a petrol at this rate.

Any idea where to look next?

Is there power going to the MAF ?

  • Author

I assume so.

After a day or so of running with the MAF disconnected, the engine light comes on with Emissions workshop on the maxidot.

Reconnecting either MAF clears it off.

Cam timing, VCDS has some weird name for the function like torsion value.

If a cam belt has been fitted without the vernier adjustment being done using VCDS then it will likely be out, if its been done by anyone but an extremely patient and determined owner then it could be even worse than not doing it at all.

  • Author

It had a cambelt done in Feb, but fuel economy was fine then. Vcds showed torsion value bang on 0 last time I checked.

I'll check again tomorrow

  • Author

Checked again this morning. Torsion in group 4 shows 0.
