Replace Head Unit With Larger Screen

Featured Replies

Hi

New to Octavia ownership,  but finally picked up a 2014 model Elegance with low mileage and a really high spec,  but would like a bigger screen, more up to date sat nav and maybe Android Auto.

Any advice or pointers on where to start or what's available would be great,

Photos of my equipment included.

Many thanks

You have the same Infotainment system as me (I have a 2015 Elegance) which is a MIB1 Amundsen.

Sadly the larger OEM screens are not compatible with the MIB1 Amundsen due to them having a different resolution (you get two half size images).

Android Auto requires different hardware, not just a firmware upgrade.

So the only way to get a bigger screen and Android Auto is to completely update/replace the screen and the glovebox unit - SashaGrace is the person to get in touch with, look for her threads on here for details of part numbers and process (dealer to remove CP, expert to re-enable features).

Mine's the same as yours. The sat nav is okay, you can update the maps here http://updateportal.skoda-auto.com/

I usually set a destination and just use the display between the speedo for the directions, usually switch back to DAB on the large display.

As for android auto I would love this but the Bluetooth works well enough for streaming and a phone holder is much cheaper than replacing the system.

Good luck with whatever you decide

Great,  thanks for that Skodaking, I'll update for now while deciding what to do

if you want.....

It will be considerable cost at least £1K, including rework and adpations changes. but it can be done as you can see.

As above, I have the same system, MIB2.5 Columbus.

You can install a MIB2/2.5 Amundsen or Columbus and select from a 6.5, 8 or 9.2 inch screen. My recommendation for anyone considering this is to set a budget. It’s about £600 these days to go MIB2 Amundsen with 8 inch screen (best bang for buck IMO, i was previously running that setup but changed for the Columbus to support the VC) as the 8 inch screens are commanding a premium right now. That really dictates the radio as if you are wanting to spend as little as possible you will want that setup. If money is no object it’s about £1-1300 for the above radio. Features wise, the Columbus retains the CD drive (it’s a DVD drive actually), has a hard drive and has a different version of the maps, has full 3D maps, option of 4G LTE WiFi and a couple of other things.

The radio unit will need Component Protection removing from it and then patching and coding outside the dealer network to re activate all of the features. For CP you will need to find someone local to you to help with that, for coding contact Pawel (Pab567) and he’ll take you from there.

Great,  thanks so much SashaGrace and JohnnyType2.

Total novice to this so,  might sound like a stupid question,  but what does the component protection,  and patching and coding entail?

Thanks again

Component Protection is how VAG lock down components such as radio’s radar’s, gateway’s etc. It stops people from stealing these parts and plugging them into other cars. Radio’s can be made CP free but may need a patch installed to stop the CP timer running out. It depends on how the CP removal is done. My current Columbus is CP free and can go in any car but my old MIB2 Amundsen was CP locked to my car. The activation of features is a specialist job and involves some trade secrets. Pawel is an expert with MIB radio’s and has done 3 for me at this point and they have all been spot on :)

I know in the MK7 Golf that if you have the Dynaudio & want to go to a newer MIB, you also have to swap the Dynaudio amp under the passenger seat as they changed it..& the old one won't work...which means its ££££…...BUGGER!!!!!!...

One more question..... I know it wouldn't look like a factory fit,  but world it be easier with an after market double din unit like Kenwood, or Pioneer which include Android Auto or Apple Play?

Fitting a double din is nearly impossible, the radio is in the glovebox as is the wiring and there are no face plates or adaptors I'm aware of to aid the fitting. Also the radio is built into the can system of the car and controls so many more features than a normal standalone radio. If you want to do this, you need to do it right.

The amp issue is only relevant if you have CANTON and you’ll know that by the presence of CANTON badges on the tweeters and a sub in the boot. If you don’t have this then it’s just the radio you need to worry about.

There isn't the space behind the screen either.  I tried this a while back and ended up sending the unit back.  The front profile is fine and there are surrounds available to fit a double din.  The problem id the depth.  The air ducts for the vent above the screen go down at an angle towards the front of the car eating into the usable space.  Some head units are shallow enough to fit but then you need to get the quadlock connector and others to the centre console.  This would require an extension or splicing into the original loom of which neither are straightforward.

End result for me was to get a MIB2 Amundsen with the 6.5 screen.  Decent upgrade on the MIB1 Amundsen I had before and everything works as it should.

For aftermarket I am pretty sure the Pioneer AVIC-EVO1-OC1 or OC2 units used to be options as replacements. I considered one but never got around to fitting it, so cannot vouch for how easy it is. I have used Pioneer speaker replacements in previous cars and they worked well.

Are the wiring harnesses on the MIB1 and MIB2 identical or do these need changing ?

Reading though another post about head units,  I came across one about this,  if any good,  and still available........ any thoughts appreciated,  otherwise looks like amundsen 8" will be my best route?

Thanks again

Or the x902d-oc3 which still has built-in sat nav as well as CarPlay and Android Auto.

They are the same, screen connector and USB need some locator tabs shaving off potentially at both ends of the screen plug if you go Columbus but nothing a few mins with a Stanley knife won’t fix :)

My current mib1 Amundsen has one of those silly mdi interfaces - is it much of a job to change that to usb ?

Nope, no more complex than changing the USB, you just remove the MDI cabling and trim change for a USB/Aux one. USB needs to be a 5Q0035726E USB to work with SmartLink. When the radio coding is done the MIB2 will need to be programmed to accept external media USB iPod and Aux in active (or not if you get an FL trim with no aux port on it.

Is this possible with the mib1 version ?

Yes. It might not take an iPod though, the original USB was a 5Q0035724E and wasn’t MFI Apple compatible. I had always wondered if simply installing a 726E USB in and altering the coding would work but I am unlikely to find out myself.
