Does your vRS feel slower or faster as it increases in mileage?

Featured Replies

I have had my wonderful Silver vRS for a month now and im convinced that it is steadily loosing power :thumbdwn:

Day 1 : The drive home from autofinders.....50 miles crusing, enjoying the smooth ride and effortless gear changes etc.

Day 2 : Warmed up car for 10 mins....Put my foot down properly for the first time, jesus this thing wheelspins in 2nd & 3rd gear, really puts me back in my seat , loads of torque steer(only revving to about 3800rpm) Grin from ear to ear

Day 2 till present day : Playing the MPG game v conservative driving, done 2.2k @ 52mpg (regular motorway use) :D

Today : Car warmed up for 10 mins - Repeat 'Day 2'- Not the same urgency, no wheelspin, not put back in seat, no torque steer :( Even the guy I take to work recons it feels slower than when I first got it.

Could this be :

1. Warmer weather, turbo prefers colder air?

2. By molly-coddling the engine during the running in period (in terms of smooth acceleration rather than booting it) the engine has 'settled' in this way?

3. Something is wrong?

4. Im just used to the torque now and in fact im going mad?

What are your experiences of running in the 06 vRS in relation to performance decrease-increase?

All this talk of the engine getting better after a few thou miles is making me wonder if something is wrong with mine...

Apparently the car has an adaptive learning programme, so, it will learn your driving style. This is what you need to do;

1. Get your friendly local dealer to delete the learned values.

2. Then drive it like a hooligan for a day (and I mean Hooligan with a capital H) .

3. Result performance restored with new "hooligan" learned values.

4. Must be driven Briskly (sorry couldn't resist) on a regular basis to maintain performance.

Worked for mine, previous owner drove with economy in mind and therefore it had stored these learned values. I tend to drive "briskly" most of the time so it's no longer a problem (my average fuel cons is about 45mpg on a good day most of the rest of the time its about 37mpg. I did manage to record 60mpg once but I was being passed by cyclists. Whats the point of having a performance car if you don't let the horses out to play ?)

Any way I hope you have fun 'cos it only gets better with additional milage.

hello mate i have only had mine since saturday and it seems fine. I havent been booting it much though as i wanna run her in properly. Still pulls very hard in all gears though!

i tend to agree with you about the performance dropping off ,:( my brother always says that my dads vrs is faster than mine with a greater kick in the *** ,hes done 10k mines done 28k , maybe i'll have to do another track day to clear it out:thumbup:

Mine seemed to lack some va-va-voom leading up to it's 1st service but then for the next week after the service the thing went like a rocket! After I calmed my driving down for a few weeks the next Speedy drive was disappointing. Could this be down to the adaptive learning programme issue? interesting...

What is an "adaptive learning programme", I can't see the point in this concept? My VRs goes like a stabbed Rat, just like when it was new, BMW and Mercedes drivers can back me up on this observation (if they are not too embarassed to admit it).

I'm confused with this:confused:

how long does it take to re-adapt?

Is it an on-going thing ?

I ask because some days mine feels sluggish, and on others is seems spot on.

Depending on the time I go to work, it either gets driven in a lunatic stylie, or in grandad mode.

Help from a techie would help...:)

what are you all going on about ?

This 'adaptive learning programme' sounds like a late April Fools to me

a few days late indeed....

what are you all going on about ?

I am glad I am not the only one feeling a bit thick reading this!

I have found mine 'seems' to be loosing power, but it is the same I experienced in the Corsa, coming from a 1 litre Fiesta to a 1.2 Corsa it seemed a lot faster until I got used to it, and it was just slow. I presume I am feeling the same way now, I am used to the Fabia's performance and just don't notice the kick any more.

Still fun leaving people though :)

same with all cars you just get used to the power whaen you go from a honda nsr 125 to a cbr 600 and then to a 900 firebade ! or from a golf gti to a golf gttdi to a S3 back to a vrs if you get me drift

How many fecking vee hickles have you got??

just one but its what I have had I am 35

In the Saab I used to have (02 9-3 Aero) it had an adaptive learning system. Trick with that was to reset the ECU (pull battery connector off for 1hour) then after you 'taught' it for max power by doing WOT (wide open throttle) runs in 3rd gear, from low revs all the way through to redline.

Not sure if the '3rd gear trick' is the same in the Fabia however, maybe worth asking a Skoda tech the best way to get your Fabia ECU to learn, if there is one on here?

Mine feels faster on some days than others, not sure if this is anything to do with the "adaptive learning system" or not?!

I kept my last VRS for 13K, it did't seem to get any faster, but was certainly quieter with less engine noise, and seemed to burn less oil.

Most modern cars ECU have adaptive learning built in, this is especialy apparant when you have a remap, first 20 / 50 miles are hard work. Also if you do short runs the car will get slower until you have a good run [italian tune up]. Had both base on experience 4 remaps short runs vis motorway work:thumbup:

Theres no such thing as adaptive learning.

but fabia vrs's are very sensitive to ambient air temperature/pressure/humidity... which is why ive got a bfofmic to cool it down :D - if you think its bad now, wait till it heats up in summer ;)

i also find i get better performance and fuel consumption using decent fuel too.. eg shell diesel extra over supermarket rubbish

the adaptive learning your thinking of would only be useful for petrol engines which adapt for the quality of the fuel because high performance petrol engines can go bang if they didnt adjust back if crap fuel was used. but still it doesnt adapt to the way you drive. just using WOT will make it adapt to the fuel quicker.

the term italian tune up is kinda a placebo more than anything else... if anything itll blow out the soot in the exhaust (good practice anyway)

PS.. ive done 64k in mine and its getting quicker :D:thumbup:

mmmmm I remember the 30+ degrees days of last summer, where the heat just saps the power away........ I noticed when autocar got that 0-60 time of 7.2 seconds it was exactly freezing outside!

Every engine needs a good blow out now and again. I worked with diesel generators for a few years and they used to coke up terrible when they had no load on them. We had to slowly load them up and the lumps of coke and soot that came out the exhaust were unbelievable.

Not sure about adaptive learning and taking it back to the garage to be reset, sounds a bit sus to me.

Have you turned the ASR on since DAY 2:P
