Air Conditioning Pump - pulley available?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

My Mk3 2015 VRS estate air con hasn't worked since I got the car a few months back - only realised when I went to turn it on with the hot spell of weather we had.

Thought it would only be a matter of getting it regassed, however the mechanic said there were bits broken off the pulley on the pump and he welded them in place which makes the air con work, but technically the air con is on all the time, affecting mpg and performance.

After ringing around and having a quick search, I can't seem to find the pulley available separately - only as a complete pump kit which is very dear.

Has anyone had any experience of this and could you point me to anywhere that offers the pulley on its own?

Thanks a lot.

The pulley isn't a clutch. It's a demountable coupling so if there is an issue with the compressor and it locks the two parts come apart and it doesn't throw the belt off.

I fear that the lack of understanding of this by the mechanic may well have left your vehicle in a less than ideal state.

The load on the engine is minimal compared with older air con designs.

From a motor trader / dealer? If so, afaik you're covered by the Consumer Rights Act - https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/buying-goods-and-services

Unsure if the welding by the other mechanic will cause issues in trying to get said motor trader/dealer to do anything.
