my next Skoda

Featured Replies

Hi just arrived via google search, I have a 2yr old Octavia at present which replaced my old company car Audi A6 1.8T . Went for the Skoda for Build and Price, but it don't go ! the 2 litre engine is lacking in the horses so I am looking to go for a turbo again having done 100000miles in the Audi with no problems at all. However I am finding that on the motorway the car is very noisy at speed. I suspect that alot of this may be down to the engine. What I don't want to do is change the car and have the same problem. Has any one else come across this?

I am considering a 4x4 and vRs at the moment read the other comments and still not made my mind up. :?:

Morgan,

Evening and welcome to Briskoda. Glad you found us.

Now onto the cars :D

Compared to the audi the sound proofing etc are not similar, this is easily noted as I sit in an Audi or VW straight after getting out of mine, there is adifference in ambient noise reduction, let alone road noise. Tyre choice also greatly effects this. The engine I find no worse (if one can really exclude other noises) than many production cars, including that of my old primera, although I did not have the turbo whistle. I suspect you'll need to take a long test drive; where are you in the country perhaps we can geta ride organised, to cover the types of road you take in.

They are I guess the two performance models of the range. Of course the superb is also an option and I guess aimed roughly at the top A4-> low A6 bracket.

Out of the dealers the vRS is the performance champion, alot more gusto than the 2litre and the a6 1.8t, alot more :D

The 4x4 would I suspect feel similar to the A6, weight, accel, but certainly not in terms of plush finish, but that's an Audi spec afterall.

Both would however bring a smile to your face for driving rewards. Having looked at a good number of "tasty" 4/5 door alternatives in the sub 20k bracket the 4x4 and vRS are amazing for drivers, rather than commuters. Of course they excel for the later, but I do very few real communting miles.

Both run the 1.8T which is very good bar the odd coil (another story but fair to mention effects all VAG cars.) Fuel on the vRS and 4x4 are similar with the 4x4 perhaps loosing out slightly, but due to the advanced nature i.e. not a full time 4x4 it keeps quite close. The vRS is generally acknowledged to be the best VAG car presently in terms of setup, the 4x4 is what I like to class as a fast farmers wagon and I would place in a similar line to the forester, but mark ahead in build and trim.

Should do for the first pass, I have the 4x4 and so far it's the most rewarding car I have owned, driven and nearly been in, bar a brief ride in a subaru 22b, which wins in pure drivers marks.

Find a dealer and see, or if your nearby feel free to have a shufty one night.

All the best, chat soon.

Welcome,

I currently own both a Octavia 2.0slx and an Octavia RS,

Both cars are completely different in all aspects of the driving experience.

The 8v 2.0 engine is noted in the motoring press for not being refined.

I find it has plenty of low down torque but is generally a little noisy. The 1.8T engine in the RS is much much quieter and refined giving a pleasing engine note. A Skoda UK salesman I spoke to at the Birmingham motor show told me that its never been really at home in the Octavia and is soon to be dropped whether this will hapen and be changed to the Audi 2.0 as they did with the Passat time will tell.

Tyre noise on the RS is more noticable than the 2.0 especialy on some concrete roads near me and I put this down to the wider tyres. The RS is definately very quiet at speed well in excess of the UK limit. I am sure that the same goes for the 1.8T variants.

Suspension wise obviously the RS is a much more pleasing car to drive over my standard model as its a lot stiffer, however its still gives a very smooth ride certainly doesn't shake your fillings out.

As far as fuel consumption goes I tend to get a better return with the RS than the 2.0. even with a spirited drive in the RS.

John

Just thought of some info that might be useful depending on your vehicles use.

The Sedan RS has bracing struts in the hatch floor area that may restrict wide loads in required to be carried. The estate RS that is about to be launched does not have these bracing bars so the area may be fully utilised.

The 4x4 models have part of the floor area used for the transmission so the storage area is slightly reduced (boot floor is higher), not much of a problem as the area is large as you know from your current vehicle.

High Morgan,

Just joined myself a couple of days ago. I used to own a Rover 218vi, which was a quick car but lacked torque and was a little thrashy on long motorway journeys. About nine months ago I traded up for a vRS and have never looked back. On long journeys I just set the cruise at 85mph and sit back and enjoy (cruise is a must). It is also a good way to keep the points off your licence. Noise is never an issue and as for space, well I'm in the middle of a kitchen re-fit and have managed to fit a double fridge freezer in the rear with the seats down. So I don't think those struts will be too much of a problem, unless you want to carry a wardrobe of course.

Funny thing was, about 4 months ago my mate Dave who is lucky enough to qualify for a company car was looking at the VW Passat when I told him about my vRS. Well Dave is no snob as he was loosing his C200 but wanted something different. To cut a long story short he test-drove mine and about 2 weeks later he ordered a Black vRS will all the trimmings (also credit to Evo magazine for their review). He has now had it 2 months and loves it like I love mine. The real justice is he now gets

Mike

Does your friend Dave own a PC and a modem, or have access to one? If so, why isn't he here with you!? :D

PS Welcome to Briskoda, and try and stay away from the 'Was it you' section for as long as possible. 8)

Hi Denis,

He does have a computer and modem, but unfortunately he also has a 5 and 2-year-old daughter who seem to preoccupy him a little. Still, such is life I suppose; my wife is expecting a little boy in June this year. Luckily for me I have Internet access at work so all is not lost.

What

Denis, don't scare em off, it's for all.

Welcome on board silveRS - good to see another northerner!

Referring back to "was it you" - don't suppose you use the M61 in the morning do you, heading into manchester?

Denis,

I see what you mean. Still, I think I

Ian, Denis,

Thanks for welcoming me into the site.

I find any forums where people have an interest in the subject are very good, but particularly when they are aimed at a specific area or market. Until now I have had to make do with vwvortex.com and others alike for my information.

Don

K, I'll keep an eye out for ya, only seen 2 silver RS's round here and they both go south on the 61 in the morning, as do I.

However I am finding that on the motorway the car is very noisy at speed.[/quote:21e28d5516]

Get a better radio!

All I can really say is welcome to you and to SilveRS as I would not wish to appear too biased towards the RS. Both are very good cars with the RS being the sporty one and the 4x4 the more relaxed. I've had mine for 14 months now and have done 71,000 miles in it. I think I know all its foibles and faults. I would have to say it is one of the best cars I have owned. I don't think you would be disappointed with either.

Jon

Where did you get the pale green paint job, SilveRS (like your atavar pic) - I quite like it? ;^}

Hi guys

Thanks for all your comments , thought I was getting somewhere today organised a drive in an vRS at the Northampton Dealer, Flew up the M1 like a lunatic only for them to ring and tell me that the sales manager had taken it out for the rest of the day, Not impressed at all. If anyone knows of any other dealers they can recommend in the Northampton area please tell. By the way so far the vRS is coming out on top.

Jim,

It was the result of my old fella

Mmmmm, peppermint!

Morgan, if you want a "go" in mine, I'll be passing by Northampton next Friday about 2pm. Let me know.

That has got to be some sort of record, Jon. What on earth do you do for a living when you are not in your car?

Jon.

thanks for your offer , unfortunately I am not around but I have found another dealer and been out in both the vRS and 4x4. Very pleased with both cars but the vRS suited me much better. The 4x4 was similar in drive to my current car just alot quicker, this des hightlight the excellent build quality though. The RS I drove had 20K on it but felt brand new. I Enjoyed the handling and ride it was as good as everyone said. The power delivery on the road is amazing .My wife has just taken delivery of a Volvo S60 which does not have the handling of the RS which is surprising when you look at the price and spec of the volvo. I did not notice any torque steer which I had heard about. Now all I have to do is decide which colour Red or Silver ( My current one is Black)

Thanks for everyones comments.

Morgan

Morgan

I have the Silver , its easier to keep clean than the red , and doesnt show small scratches as much as the red (now Corrida Red , the brighter Rallye Red having been dropped) but my dealer does have a Corrida Red RS in the showroom , and it looks bloody fantastic all polished up...in fact if I were to choose one now , it would be a choice between the red and Lemon Yellow , as every car on the road seems to be silver now!
