Can you help me see sense please...?

Featured Replies

Good evening all.

I have  a Skoda Superb SEL Executive 1.4 TSI ACT, that is, quite frankly, the best car I have ever owned.

I have driven loads of cars over the years, and this car has been the best. I have had so many compliments over the 3 1/2 years of ownership.

Every time I get in it, I grab the steering wheel, look around, and feel really happy to be in such a lovely car.

However, I really like the facelifted model and this is where my dilemma begins.

You see, I have two autistic boys, and they need a lot of space in the back, and the Superb has been the perfect answer. I added things like the LED plus package to make it a nice environment for them at night and to keep their anxiety levels down.

My natural response was to simply order a new Superb. However, when I look at the specification, dare I say it, I feel ripped off. The list price for my car in 2016 was just over 24K, now it is over 27K. I know prices go up and I accept that totally. Examining the spec, however, things get worse. The SEL Executive now loses the Columbus system, which now costs over 1K. I now need to spec new trim inserts if I want the LED plus package. This was originally £195, now about £400 in total. I now have to add the boot net programme at £60, which last time was included at no cost. The killer though is that the wonderful touch of two umberellas in the car has been reduced to just one.

I reckon that to get the same spec of car will now cost me about 4.5K more. I do, I really do, feel ripped off.

Can I ask you guys your opinion please? Are you in a similar situation? I am looking for some insightful comments to help me see this clearly please. Perhaps I am missing something.

I really like the Skoda Superb, and want another one, but I want to feel like I am getting decent value for money, a core feature that Skoda was built on.

Many thanks.

Prices do tend to go up. This is compounded by the fact that the pound has fallen in value. Double whammy. To make it seem like the base price is the same, they make every addition more expensive. Buy the car you want. It's not a rip off. If it makes you feel better, blame it on Brexit.

Simple. Keep your current car.

If you like your current car so much, why do you want to spend £4K for a few cosmetic tweaks.   Why not simply keep what you have as £4K will pay for lot of maintenance.

What’s more the general view is the 1.4 engine is better than the new 1.5 miller cycle version which has some dubious characteristics.

This sounds to me like the old saying the grass is greener in next field, when you get there, and in 1-2 years will the alternative car really be any better than what you have got.

As for the pricing going up, (and some bits of spec being deleted to limit the price rise), blame those who voted for Brexit, their actions caused Currency move which means Brits need to pay 10-15% more for anything initially priced in euros.

I have a 2018 1.4 SE Tsi, like the OP the best car I have owned. Superbly practical. Great MPG, enough performance.

The Superb was really a bit of a bargain before. In May 1918 mine cost £18'375 new including just over £1000 of options. Given the quality of the car and the great reviews it has had in the press I'm not surprised Skoda are pushing prices a bit. The fall in the pound obviously makes a difference as well.

For the OP? Same spec car costing £4.5k more - keep the current car for another year or longer and the depreciation  saved will soon be more than £4.5k.

As for whether the new price is value? I've not looked but I guess it depends where it's competiors from VW, Volvo, Ford, BMW etc are priced for the same spec.

I do love these typos

In May 1918 you would have been buying a Lauren and Klement car not an everyday Skoda  but I guess not even that would have cost £18375.  😁

Some insightful comments. Really helpful. Thank you all.

Think I will keep this car a little while longer and see what happens in the future.

Not wishing to hijack this thread or enter any form of Brexit debate but suggest you look at the spot rate of £ vs € for 10 years.

sure it came off a cliff in the past couple of years but we are about where we were in 2011..

The Op was asking about now vs 3-4 years ago, so why compare to 2011.

I kept to the period enquired about.
