Engine warning light flashing??

Featured Replies

Hello people I’ve recently just brought a Skoda fabia vrs 2010 180 dsg and the last couple of days the engine warning light has came on. It’s only got 51k on the clock but the weird thing was I just filled it up with fuel and was driving at 30 mph down my road and it started juddering and the engine warning light started flashing. Has anyone else had this issue or is my car just a dud. Please help me

I'm assuming you know nothing of the history of these VRS MK2 but the car was working when you test drove it?, do you have full service history previous owner?  Did you fuel using SUPER UNLEADED

@2010fvrs

Welcome.

Did you buy the car as a private deal?

So many things that it can be, but the unusual thing is the Engine Light is flashing and not just on.

It is the engine light only is it and not the EPC?

So there is the Fuel, then the exhaust /sensors,  Spark Plugs (1 plug), Ignition Coils. Pipes / breathers not on right after a spark plug change.

Fouled plugs / plug.

(water pump / supercharger magnetic clutch, likely if never had a new water pump.)

You need to see if any fault codes are logged.

You do not want the car going in 'Limp mode'.

PS

You have one of the first vRS Mk2 Fabia in the country.

I had one exactly the same, and another few members had the same red ones.

Yours might be one that a member had on a personal plate and was sold a few years back for Spares or repairs.

Not sure as i did not know the Reg Number that was on it.

But if it is it Skoda had it as a Media Car the same as my one was.  EDIT, actually it was OE10 LVJ

This one was mine.

I brought it through a garage with full service history and I was using regular fuel until today when I put super in. Definitely test drove it

@2010fvrs - This might sound odd, but check the brake lights work. If they're all out, you need a replacement, genuine brake light switch.

@2010fvrs

What does the Full Service history show, 8 oil changes in 51,000 miles?

?

Any Warranty & Service Campaign History,

Is it showing the Breather Mod and Software Update done or an engine rebuild or replacement?

Does the Service / Warranty history show any Oil Consumption tests having been done?

?

Has Service Campaign '34F7' been done on the DSG,  is there a sticker in the spare tyre well showing that?

?

When were the spark plugs and air filter last checked or changed?

?

What Super Unleaded did you put in?

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/325735-an-addition-to-spark-plug-thread-mine-have-disintegrated-please-recommend-replacements

It is not unusual to put in Super Unleaded when it has not been getting run on super unleaded and give the car some welly and then get misfires when on turbo and supercharger, misfires might not log.   It shows up a dodgy plug on its way out.

& also the detergents do the job they should.

*** Unless the tank was very empty the fuel should not have an instant affect.***

I did once get bad Super Unleaded at a Sainsburys and it was about 8 miles later engine coughed and i was booting hard it and it went into limp mode,

both warning lights on, engine and EPC and the turbo disabled and i was very near having a brown trouser moment as in the outside lane and moving quite quickly..

(@ Preston Tesco when i was going south i filled my tank with Tesco Momentum 99 which was my usual  choice in Scotland, used for many thousands of miles

i was running Stage 1 with a switchable map and the next day the car ran like crap and i had to switch to the standard map as it was 95 ron in the tank and no way 99 ron. Luckily i was carrying 102 Ron in the boot heading to Santa Pod)

It is unusual that the Exhaust Emissions light flashes and just flashes and then does not stay on.

You had best get it checked out if the Engine light stays on, if it has not had a new water pump and this is the issue then use the watranty to foot the £500 or so bill this will cost.

........................

The DSG Service Campaign is not relevant to the Flashing Engine Light.

Just found this in the boot and it seems to be misfiring from when I was standing behind listening to the exhaust and I can feel it every now and then when sat in the car. It’s upsetting because I love this little car and only just got it lol

Don't despair. I know that it is a different make but my daughter's Vauxhall Corsa had shuddering and the engine management light come on. Fault was a dodgy spark plug. Start with the simple things first before fearing the worst.

Hopefully it is just the one spark plug on the way out.   Replace all 4 and i recommend you use DENSO plugs.

So an Ignition Coil puller is needed.

@UrbanPanzer  Has done an excellent guide.

See post page 22 on 21st March.

Breather pipes off or punctured during a spark plug change is not uncommon, so look for a pipe off now, one that worked loose or was not connected correctly.

Spark plugs failing is common fault.

Yes very few denso have ever failed, tho I had one, Skoda were supposed to fit them during oil fixes, receptionist had them rattling around in a drawer. Not all spark  plugs  are equal so make sure gap is same on all, 0.6mm to 0.7mm is common. Good practise is to get the garage to number them, and give them into your hands then you know they been changed

So quick update it’s cylinder 4 the plug was shagged. All ngk ones. Having them replaced under a rac warranty I had on the car. Hopefully this sorts it out and it’s nothing more serious

Hopefully that is it then.  I take it they put in NGK's again.

Be prepared to change them next year maybe for something else.

I would stick with Tesco Momentum 99 or someone elses 97 ron Super Unleaded,  give Shell V-Power Nitro + a miss.  Not because of price, but because of  the detergent package.

A CAVE engine can have Bore Wash as it is.

If you are changing the oil any time i would go to VW 502 spec so 5w 40 Full Synthetic and do not use VW504 00 which is 5w 30 FS III (Long Life)

(That Long Life Oil and Shell V-Power Nitro + is a mixture made in hell IMO for a Twincharger.)

They were original plugs in it. Been replaced with the denso plugs now. As for fuel I live right next to Sainsbury’s and they have decent super unleaded at 1.35 atm it seems to run really nice on. Only thing is with the weather being so hot at the moment I think all cars are running a bit pants as well

Check your Air Filter and see if fresh / clean and OEM or has had a fancy filter fitted that could be dirty..

& Be aware that since the plug was failing that ignition coil was get over hot maybe.  Not saying change it, just be aware.
