Yes actually two months ago in the books but I never owned the car at that stage why?

There's a coc-up that gets done quite often involving the mixing up of a 61mm  long bolt that holds the back end of the dogbone mount, with a 65mm long one that holds the bellhousing. When that longer one is tightened it dents the hydraulic tube of the steering rack. This causes one-sided problems with the power steering.

Honestly can't remember which side it affects. Someone else might. Left is believable.

On the other hand, is the top of the spring broken in your second picture? Something looks amiss.

The shock boot is twisted and torn.

Probably the missing bit of coil spring you mentioned, tore it up as it exited the strut.

Yeah that spring looks busted.

No wonder the steering is horrible, luckily the OP takes good photos but it's a shame he has his eyes shut while doing it.

Last time it happened to me I heard the piece of spring hit the underside of the car as it bounced off, sounded like a gunshot at 70 mph.

Mine sounded like a spanner hitting the road but I was only doing about 20mph when it fell out.
