Android Auto for an idiot

Recommended Posts

I'm seeing more and more things about Android auto but I don't have a clue. So I plug my android phone into the car and it links up certain apps from my phone? Can you control what comes up and what dosent? For example I don't want text messages/Facebook coming up on my dash or being read out etc, but I would want Spotify and maps. Can you just turn off certain functions? Thanks!

It's designed to offer what you would want while driving but not the stuff that distracts you. Text and WhatsApp are built in but easy enough to ignore/mute. I don't use Facebook chat much but normal FB notifications are blocked. Most common music/podcast/audiobook apps come up. Nothing is enabled or disabled by the user but I have never needed to either way in 3-4 years using it. Only once have I hunted out an app specifically for it and that was for podcasts in the early days when there weren't as many apps available.

Could I please ask a silly question: Does the phone need to be plugged into the car via USB - or can it connect via Bluetooth? I've seen different opinions, I have a 2016 Octavia, and would prefer the Bluetooth connectivity just for selfish/lazy reasons 😁

For Android Auto, it'll need plugging in via USB.

If you just want calls and music, BT should be fine.
