Front and back windscreen wipers

Featured Replies

Hello I have the wiper problem with my skoda Octavia vrs mk2 2006 and wanted some advice as to weather it could be narrowed down to a certain part.

The back windcreen wiper is intermittent until the car gets hot. I have replaced the motor about 3yrs ago but didn't help back then and just left it but its time to sort it. The other thing is the timed wiper speeds on front wipers choose when the want to work. So I was wondering if it could be the stick as there both on the same one or could it be down to wiring?

Thanks

If you have a rain detector on the windscreen behind the rear view mirror (such as on the Elegance spec and probably on your vrs), then what you are seeing is normal. The "timing" varies with the rate of falling rain. Sensitivity can be changed by the three position slider on the right hand stalk.

Like you said, it looks like the wipers choose when they want to work because that is exactly how they work and why you have three positions for setting the sensitivity to your liking.

Have a play with slider switch to see how it works.

Thanks for this.  You've explained why my wipers seem to operate according to their own rules :)

I will try it out later and see what happens, Im sure I don't have them but could be wrong. Hows the best way to test it as if I push stalk up wipers come on just like normal

Put the stalk in the auto/intermittent position (first position up from wipers off), then wait until it is raining a reasonable amount for intermittent use. With the wipers working intermittently, try the sensitivity switch on top of the stalk in each of the three positions in turn.

Did you you check that you have auto wipers?

In case you don't have a copy of your driver's manual, here is a link to the pdf manual for your model year:

https://manual.skoda-auto.com/004/en-com/Model/Octavia_1Z/05-2007/en   then click on Download Manual.

Take a look at page 62 for the description of wiper operation.

Thanks very much. I will check later tonight.

So I played around with it, and still the same problem. I'm not sure I have auto wipers. Doesn't look like there's any sensors.

No, you don't have a rain sensor on the screen.

Intermittent operation is manual using the same controls but the timing is fixed for each of the positions - or on your early car you may not have the 3 position switch.

I would try spraying contact cleaner (NOT WD40) into the gaps around the three position switch as others have used this fix for poor contact effects on both stalks. Some have gently opened up the left stalk to get better access but not sure about the right stalk.

If your car doesn't have the 3 position switch and thus only one intermittent speed, then you may have to replace the right hand stalk assembly.

Thank you. My car has everything in the manual you sent just not the sensor bit. If I move stalk up one then I can use the 3 speed switch. I will try to spray some contact cleaner In there and see. Do you no much about the rear wiper problem and wether it could be related or a wiring problem somewhere?

There are different motors for the hatchback and the estate. The hatchback has the screen wash fluid going through the motor shaft. With age and wear, water leaks into the motor, causing it to fail.

There are many threads about the problem, some showing how to replace the motor, check for leaks etc. Use the search function (top right on topic listing page) to find the threads. A search can also be made by searching with Google using   Briskoda Octavia 2   followed by your search terms.

Wiring issues are less common but check for broken wires in the flexible cable conduit between the body and the hatch.
