Sonos etc

Featured Replies

Part of my home build that I've been banging on about is an included Sonos multiroom setup with ceiling speakers.

If I'm honest I'm not really all that bothered about it.

Is it worth having? Is there a better option?

As per my other thread I'll have an understairs rack with all my data cabling so I could in theory bring a sound system back to there.

See if there is a Sonos demo room setup nearby to try it out.  I think Richer Sounds may offer this, Sonos at Richer Sounds

(Apologies, this should have been a response to your other thread)

I'm sure this may have occurred to you at some point but just in case do give some serious thought to how you are going to maintain a good working temperature in your comms closet.  You'll need some sort of temperature-controlled ventilation and the ability to control and limit the inflow of cooling air.  Filters, too.  You may also need forced cooling depending on the thermal output of your kit and the natural ventilation potential.

Another consideration will be where you plan to vent the closet?  If it's into the house space is it noise and dust suppressed?  Do you want hot air venting into the house when it's hot too?  What about reverse flow suppression - stopping uncontrolled air from the house space flowing back into the closet and upsetting your temperature controls?

I don't know the configuration of your new property but have you considered moving the comms to the loft?  Build a simple cupboard with temperature control and a filtered non-return outside vent.

I would think also there are standalone solutions on the market for domestic installations but I've haven't looked recently.

wrong thread :(

Have you thought about some Echo dot speakers as they are quite cheap when on offer and work on WiFi so don't need holes in your ceiling?

In saying that, maybe forward think your lounge for a 'full' surround setup.

We're really not keen on any of the devices which rely on Amazon or Google (or dead Steve Jobs) listening to our every word I'd rather have a dumb system with better speakers (I do cyber security for a living, I do not have any trust in these companies at all).

I'm considering telling the builder not to bother putting it in tbh. We have some very good seperate devices (I looove my Ruark r4) and although a multiroom setup would be nice we'd actually be quite happy to have a seperate bluetooth system (we're usualy streaming spotify) in each relevant room.

Installing any technology device means that in a few years time it will be obsolete. I'd rather install dumb speakers and have the 'intelligence' in your server rack where you can update it more easily.

Ikea have launched some speakers designed in collaboration with sonos. Symfonisk.

I thinking that I might need to go into Ediburgh and have a conversation with some guys at Richer Sounds.
