White smoke , new vrs , petrol ....would you be worried

Featured Replies

Ok I will try and explain this as the best I can in my lacking car knowledge .

I have a MY20 petrol vrs which is nearly 2 weeks old . Im trying to drive in a sensible way whilst I try and run it in for about 500 miles (easier said than done ), its currently done around 240 miles . Im only doing short journeys in the week , 3 miles each way daily for work but longer journeys on the weekends and some other evening uses .

So , the other day I was at some traffic lights roughly around a mile and a half into my journey and an outside temperature of 20 degrees, the temperature gauge was at the correct temperature so I put it into sport (dsg) .The lights changed and off I went a little heavy footed up to 60mph and eased off . The following day a guy at work said he was behind me at the lights and noticed what he said was white smoke coming out the exhaust when I accelerated off which he said was not a good sign for a new car and my car was a bag of ****e .

Should I be worried ? don't want to go to my dealer just yet as the car seems to be running great in my opinion . Maybe it was condensation but surely on a hottish day and the engine at temperature this shouldn't happen . Its put me off giving it a little beans now and im not exactly a boy racer thrashing the crap out of it everywhere ……….nearly 50 and 95% of the time a sensible driver .

You'll find a million and one threads on here about this.

It's probably just condensation, they pretty much all do it in one circumstance or another.

It'll be worse (visually) if you're pootling around everywhere and then giving it the odd blast - the moisture isn't getting blown out of the exhaust very quickly.

(edit - i had similar comment from someone at work about the amount of condensation out the back of mine but without the derogatory element)

So maybe wait for longer journeys to make sure theres no condensation build up . I presume if it is condensation it shouldn't do long term damage . I personally didn't notice it happen as I was watching the road .

Think your work colleague is a tad jealous and agree with Kenai about the condensation. Moisture sitting in the back boxes during the short commutes not being burnt off then flooring it will blow the moisture out and looks worse than it is. No need to worry and ignore snide comments from folks with inferior motors.:D

I'll give you 30,000 to own one.

240 miles on short drives over 2 weeks on average, i would saw is just condensation / any burn off the components when opening it up.

Get the car up to temp this weekend, get some miles on it and enjoy it

New engines do this for a while. You'll probably notice it more now with the cooler mornings and evenings this time of year. As long as coolant isn't dropping and car runs okay nothing to worry about.

Even modern diesels do it.

Ok, want my PayPal account? 😁

Worth checking the oil level every month for the first year. Mine used 1.25 litres over the first 18,500 miles but none since (now showing 25,500 miles). Skoda Master Tech told me they all use a bit of oil at first and then settle down which is normal according to him.:)

It is only normal with the ones that do use oil, obviously those that do not which there are many must be abnormal.

The Tech was taking the line from Skoda / VW for all engines as in the Owners manuals re 5,000 km.

?

Why do sales staff not check engine oil for the 3,000 miles plus they run Demonstrators that will become Ex Management cars.

They wait until a low Oil or Low Oil pressure light comes on.  'Simply not clever'.

I should have stated in my above post that I was referring to condensation not white smoke which is an entirely different thing and would be of concern. So check out which one it is. My bet its condensation.

IMPORTANT.

When collecting a car , new or used,  check where the oil is when cold, then when at operating temp check so you know both.

Then you know what a Trained Tech, Fitter or untrained one put the car out with.

Maybe if getting a test drive in a Sales Managers Daily Driver, dip the oil, see where it is.... This is going to be a Ex Management car, specced up,

one registered keeper, dozens of drivers, never raced or rallied, well maybe not.

Remember the car will most likely have 95 Ron unleaded used, at PDI if new, or for 3,000 miles plus for Ex Management / demonstrators,

maybe low oil light has been on several times in 3 months.

Does it accept Venezuelan currency ?

30,000 is worth about 16p, but falling. Hurry up and get your Focus to claim your reward.

Think the warm hatch mentioned was actually the feisty Fiesta ST (Mountune bits would make it a bit better I suppose) but most driven by 22 year old Boy Racers with very loud exhausts.

Ah the Fiesta, that's the one that comes with drivers and passengers baseball cap. I bet the insurance database is full of middle aged mothers who just happen to have 20+ year old sons who drive them. Got to be fast though, joking apart. Small, light, good handling. Better than my 1.3 mk3 Escort when I was 22.

Aye, was a Fiesta not a Focus. Where I live every second 15 year old you see is racing about in a blue or white Fiesta ST. They might be a nice car but the image of them is completely ruined to me by those who drive them.

Highlight was one daft lad trying to overtake an RS6 on a single lane, 40mph, carriageway with one. Absolutely no idea what he was thinking.

Sorry for changing the subject of the thread btw 😳

Never owned a new car so dont know how they act during the running in stage, but I see cars all the time that have a bit of condensation from moving off at lights, id only worry if you were getting it when the car is under load (if its continuous while driving).

As has been said (before it went off topic 😉), there are a number of threads on this.....

I tend to drive reasonably sensibly most of the time, but if I need to overtake a line of slower traffic and give it some proper welly it will put out some smoke or condensation. Not really sure what colour it is but it's not blue or diesel black. I've stopped worrying about it now as it seems a common issue.........

I will keep an eye on the fluid levels and see how things go . Judging by the replies I am probably  worrying about nothing...…..thanks

My VRS is over 3 years old - 20000 miles.  If I boot it onto a motorway/ A road, a big condensation cloud is thrown from the exhaust, and I have to wipe my rear window..totally normal. 🙂

Just 1.4tsi but constant short journeys completely filled our exhaust till it gurgled and dribbled water.

Looked like a steam train behind when I took it for a blast to clear it.

Mine was exactly the same throughout ownership.
