....... into the long grass!

Featured Replies

This afternoon, when we arrived at a small rural church for a choir concert, we were directed onto a patch of meadow to park the Karoq. As I slowly pulled on to the grass, the car suddenly jammed the anchors on. At first I thought I'd hit a fallen gravestone, but quickly realised that it was (hopefully) the 'safety thing' reacting to tufts of long grass. Had my 'simply clever' Skoda mistaken a few blades of grass for an old lady crossing the road?

I looked at the 'car' menu on the infotainment screen - and saw Driver assistance and Parking & Manoeuvring - each of these had various options to be selected, ticked, or unticked.

Can anyone advise me, please, what settings are necessary to avoid being bought to a grinding (and embarrassing) halt by a few blades of grass, and if the original settings are restored next time the car is started?

Many thanks!

Auto brake on parking sensors.........

Ha ! Yes , been there done that. Mine was a plastic bag drifting in the wind. Frightened the life out of me. Those brakes come on sharp. I found a menu somewhere that gave you the option of high, medium, low sensitivity. I don’t think that once set those revert to a default every start.

On the right hand side of the steering wheel, press the button with a car symbol with markings around it to enter the assistance systems menu.

Turn 'front assist' off next time. It'll re-enable next time you start the engine and will warn you it's off until then.

in settings you can set the reaction time early medium or late

There's very little on the RHS of my steering wheel but that could be because mine is an SEL whilst yours is an Edition. Is the 'front assist' that button with P and 'radio waves' emanating from it?

Well I did try with the first reply to this thread.....perhaps my posts aren't getting through to others on here?

Infotainment system menu 'CAR' - 'Parking and Manoeuvring' - if 'Activate Automatically' is ticked then to prevent the long grass problem go to 'Manoeuvre Braking' and 'Deactivate', you'll still get the beeps and the display warning but no sudden stops.

Yes, Berisford, but I had quickly concluded myself that the sudden stop was brought about by the Auto brake and not some carelessly discarded tombstone. Are words being rationed in Nottingham? I wanted to know how to avoid this situation in future and your second reply looks far more informative.  I will certainly look into that - thank you.

Press the button circled in red - you can disable front assist there.

This is the quickest way to do it and does not require you to navigate menus on the infotainment screen.

Many thanks, LBFS, but there is nothing on my SEL that resembles your picture - I suspect that it's because you have the more comprehensive 'Edition' model. I am wondering if the equivalent on the SEL is the 'P' button to the immediate left of the hazard flashers.

The 'P' button you mention turns the parking sensors on and off, but doesn't have any impact on the front assist system.

Could you take a photo of your steering wheel? I've looked through auto trader and all the SE-Ls there have the standard Skoda steering wheel with the button to access the assistance systems.

No photo needed, LBFS, it's there as plain as day. I thought that you meant to the RHS of the steering column rather than 'on' the wheel itself. I had never even noticed that button! I thank you with all my heart and offer you a virtual pint of Adnams Explorer or Green King Abbot or both! May I trouble you further? ...........

Presumably, as I approached the long grass that triggered the brake, I should have pressed that button - does that show on a warning light to remind me that the auto brake has been turned off? Would the system be automatically reset next time the ignition is switched on?

Aha, not a problem at all! Abbot will do nicely, though maybe one for when the car's at home...

You'll get an orange (I think) warning light on the dash, under the maxi dot display for as long as front assist is disabled. Front assist is ON by default when the car is started up, irrespective of whether you've previously disabled it.
