Workshop advice needed on presses, please

Featured Replies

Whilst in conversation with a friend over the last few days I was reminded of the utility of a workshop press and, on searching, was pleasantly surprised to see a wide variety of offerings at affordable prices.

Now come the problems;  what features do I need (as opposed to the ones i "can't live without")?

My expected usage covers the usual replacement of bearings in a variety of road wheels from 10" trailers through 15-17" cars to 19" motorcycle wheels, together with anything around the workshop that requires more controlled persuasion than I can apply kinetically :)

Questions I can see to ask now include:

1) do I need a press with a gap to take a 19" motorcycle wheel plus tyre, or can I split one of the uprights and fit it through the spokes?

-  I don't see a problem with car or trailer hubs as they are much smaller by comparison,

2) how much force do I need to plan for?  The units I've seen range from 2-12 tons, and whilst bigger is usually better it also costs more and takes up more space.

Any thoughts out there?
